Club Fbass (thread 13)

Wow that’s sweet...Congrats.
I’ve always wanted to try a Rosewood F.
BNs are absolutely as good as it gets.

This one is Macassar. Northern ash body, 2018 build, mint, 9.5 lbs!

Jake, will curious how you like it. I had a BN6 with the ash body/ebony board. I didn't like that combo. Always liked the sound of the BN's better with the maple board....although I would probably love rosewood as well.

yeah I’ll be curious as well. I typically like maple boards, and my other main Basses both have maple boards so I thought I’d try an ebony board and see how I like it. I know I’m not a huge rosewood fan, as it feels a little slower than maple in terms of snap, but ebony still has the quickness I like. we shall see!

It’s been a while since I’ve visited our Fbass club. Hope everyone is doing well! I was @ Brian Barrett’s Lowend bass shop & talked with him about an issue I have with the piezo bridge on my BN5. I’m not a big fan of the Fbass exposed core strings. This bridge design doesn’t lower enough to accommodate a low action with standard wrap strings. Brian suggested shimming the neck pocket. I hesitated to have Brian do the shim due to the fact that I had just restrung with a fresh set of exposed cores. Have any of you shimmed the neck of your Fbass? If so, have you noticed a difference in tone / sustain, etc??? I’m considering this with my next set of strings.

Personally, I'd hesitate to have anyone but F-bass touch my bass, but maybe that's just being over sensitive.

What don't you like about the exposed core strings? I ask because after using a bunch of others, I just went back to them. Seems like all the clips of F's where I'm like "yeah! Sounds like an F-bass!" were using them, so I'm going to try to get past my distaste for their upper fret 'warble' (tho this set seems to have less of it than my last).

The strings are definitely part of the F Bass package when it comes to the set up on a BN, and I would't personally shim the neck as you have a killer package with that BN. If the strings really aren't your vibe and you have to have lower action I would file down the bottom of the saddles...you might even be able to reach out to Hipshot to get a shallower A-style bridge.

Hi everyone...

Does anyone here has an F Bass Deluxe with the dual coils? How is it compared to a BN5 when both are in Single Coil mode? And in dual coils, does anyone ever compare it with a Fodera with Duncan Dual Coils?

I’m really curious as I never tried a Deluxe, but I’m very familiar with the BN and Fodera’s sound so it will help me to get an idea of what it sounds like.

Thanks!

I have a set of D’addario NYXL‘s on my BN6. (All my Basses have them except for the BN5.) The BN6 has a B type bridge which gives plenty of room for lowering saddles. I’ve developed a comfort level with the NYXL’s (first nickel wounds I’ve enjoyed).

My recollection is the single coil sound is the same, or same enough that I couldn't tell, between the Deluxe and the normal BN5 pickups.

As for the comparison to Fodera - they definitely sound different - but that's also due to the difference in preamp. I always thought of the Fodera is clean/hifi/sterile, and the FBass to have a bit more warmth and character...

Thanks for the review. I would expect the F Bass to sound warmer compared to Fodera.
