Club Fbass (thread 13)

he's probably mortified and embarrassed I did it.
Yep, my face is bright red right now....

Anywho, a Grace Peace Earth video is a great idea and I'll add that to my to do list. As far as the bass I used, it was my previous BN6, with a maple board and a lighter swamp ash body and split coil pickups. I think at that point it had an aguilar preamp which I always set flat. The new natural BN6 is a little heavier and gained a more solid low end and some punchiness. I find the single coil pickups fuller sounding. It also plays a little better as the old one just never felt 100% right despite all my setup attempts...

You guys are all enablers and horrible influences. I hope you realize that. This thread makes me want to do terrible things to my checking account. Extra terrible, since these things are even pricier here in Korea than they are back in North America. I'd ask if they're worth it, but I suspect you'll all tell me "Of course they are, man, go for it!"

How would you describe the necks on the BN5s? I've got tiny hands, so I don't want humongously beefy necks, but I also don't really like the flat & thin neck on my Ibanez BTB5 very much. Are they... erm... manageable?

Like a slightly wider 4-string Fender Jazz Bass neck. Not as chunky as a 5-string Fender. If you custom order, F Bass will shape the neck to your liking. E.g. you can specify slim profile, assymmetrical, U-shape, C-shape, narrow nut. Generally George recommends a beefier neck for better tone, but my slim and narrow neck basses still have plenty of it.

As far as price, you may look into direct order from F Bass website which may be cheaper.

To be clear: David never asked me to do anything like this. In fact, he's probably mortified and embarrassed I did it.

I'm just listening to Grace Peach Earth as I work and had the thought: it would be pretty cool to see David play this song.

There is a short [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]and hear for yourself why it would be cool to see him play it.

For all I know Dave played it on a B.C. Rich Bronze Warlock, but I'm sure I hear a C string, and it sure sounds like an Fbass BN6 with a maple board.

At any rate, it's awfully pretty, Dave, thanks for sharing it with the world.
Killer player for sure. Sounds great.

I just got my Fbass back from my luthier extraordinaire following a much needed fret dressing. I also put on a new set of Chromes (my favourite strings). WOW!!! :woot::woot::woot: Now we're cooking!!!
Here are a couple of photos of my 1987 turquoise ceruse lacquer sweetheart :smug: Yes, George has been building amazing basses for a long time

Guys,

Question for you. I have a BNF with a maple fretboard. It has black side markers but no markers of any kind on the fretboard. I've been playing more upper register stuff lately and I'm finding that I miss having some kind of marker on the fretboard up there. Any thoughts or suggestions about how to obtain some sort of non-damaging fretboard dots that could be put on and taken off later if need be?

If you do a search either here or Google there is a maker of self adhesive fret marker dots. I don't remember the name of the company though. Funny thing, the only time I miss having position markers besides the side dots is in the very high upper registers. Maybe because they are a little harder for me to see up there or something, or maybe I don't play a lot up there and good old muscle memory is good enough for me in the lower registers. I have heard that George will install some if you send the bass to him. Jim

Soon! Getting giddy for my new toy - a Tea Burst BN5. I was originally going to get a charcoal burst, but after seeing the Tea Burst in the "recently sold" section on the F Bass site, I asked if they'd be willing to do the finish again for me. Can't wait for mid-February. :woot:

What are you guys using to clean your maple fret boards with? When I got my BN5 15 years ago George included a care and feeding list and he recommended lemon oil but wasn't very specific except don't use any with silicone in it. I've been using Old English lemon oil, no silicone, but after watching some threads on TB am concerned that it might be harmful to the fret glue over time and they could become loose. Does any one know what George uses in the shop, Mitch(Basses55) are you out there? Some commercial cleaners such as Dunlop 02 isn't made to use on maple boards, not sure why. Has any one used Music Nomad F-One oil ? Thanks, Jim

I use a cloth, water and elbow grease. Works fine, i dont find oil is necessary.

This amazing BN5 is headed to NAMM and George seems to be very pleased with the bass as it nears completion! We'll be sure to post a pic of the bass when Marcel forwards us a studio photo. Jason Raso will be doing a video of it's sister in a few months. Stay posted for the link.

As I plan for the arrival of my new baby BN5, I'm wondering: what hard cases are folks using for theirs - it is going to spend a lot of time in vans and such, so the gig-bag won't cut it all the time. I've got my Lakland in a Gator ATA/TSA molded case and I really like it, but I want to know what experiences others have had.

I use a G&G Fender style, and also the TKL styrofoam style that Fbass used to ship with. Only prob with the TKL is the handle is in the center of the case, and is therefore not balanced when carrying.
I like the "Ballistic" gig bags they ship with now the best.

You can see where you have to crush the foam a little on the TKL for the upper horn to fit:

They ship with Aguilar's if you want hum cancelling. I believe it is Fbass pickups if you want single coils.

Placed an order for a VF-5 in October and the Fbass made singles are no longer an option. Only the Aguilar's are available.
I've seen several posts in this thread regarding the tone of the Fbass single coils vs the Aguilar singles and HC singles, with no replies. I'm a bit curious as well. Aguilar offers a 60's and 70's wind, I'm curious if before they started using the Aguilars if the Fbass pups had a 60's or 70's wind, or did they use the same pups in VFs with 60's and 70's pup spacing.

Fbass and Fodera you have the best of both worlds and you can spec out a helluva bass!
