Saturday night was the first "gig" in a bit; Blues/Rock cover band. I met these guys through happenstance and It has been a lot of fun. Electric Guitar, B3, drums, bass, and one of the best singers around. I have also been whittling basses, so I am down to my best 5, 3 F basses, each different. This one has been magical since the first time I played it. Thanks for listening to me rattle on...

I haven't posted in TB for a long time but I was looking through music websites. I saw that Paul's Boutique in Toronto has an F Bass guitar (1985) for $2999CAD. Guitars don't appear very often. They've added that it has a synth pickup but no power supply.

This is the first F Bass I’ve owned. I’ve wanted one for quite sometime. I am quite impressed with the 15 minutes I had to check it out after unpacking it. I’m pretty stoked to get deep into it

So I’m just looking for a little conversation on this…
I’ve had a week now with my VF4 (Aguilar J/MM configuration w/ Aguilar OBP-1). I absolutely LOVE the bass, the feel and the resonance are fantastic - I’m very happy with it on that front. The only thing I can’t really decide if I like or not, is the (electric) tone. The Aguilar tone that I am hearing feels a bit “choaked/muffled/wooly” (you pick the word) to my ears, even after a new set of strings. My main basses that I have played out with in the past are an EBMM SS 4HH and a Bongo 5HH (both with 18V preamp = more headroom). Is there a different option for PuPs/OBP would help the bass/tone to “breath” a bit more?

Well folks, I believe I have my keeper Fbass! Love this one. Had it for sale in the Classifieds and despite letting a good friend try it, I’m glad I didn’t let it go!

I think there’s a lot of hesitation with the Aguilar Pickups but let tell you, they sound killer in this bass!

Ash tone block, Alder Wings, Brazilian Rosewood Fretboard…forget about it!

My favourite strings so far on this bass are Black Diamond VT Series Black Coated Strings. Also sounds amazing with Thomatik Infeld Flats!

The PJ combo makes it so versatile and I must prefer blending these pickups.
The back pickup has amazing bark and the ash toneblock helps with additional cut. Sounds killer in a mix!

If your ears are used to EBMM and you are wanting to get a similar sound from the F you’ll probably going to be disappointed, the F is a different animal, I had a SR5 for five years before before I bought my BN5 and it sounded nothing like it which for me was a good thing as I was never enthralled with the sound of the EBMM , even with the MM pickup on yours I doubt you’re going to get there, I guess you can go down the rabbit hole of swapping out pups and preamps or get an outboard pre like Sadowsky, that should give you a sonic boost.

What year is your BN5, I talked to Marcel a couple of months ago about having a pickguard made for mine and they do have a standard one that they sell but your bass can’t be older than a certain year or you will have to ship the bass to them to make sure it fits, mine was too old for them to simply send me one, contact Marcel and he will give you the cut off year.

I think you hit the nail on the head Jim. My initial reaction was a bit of a disappointment because I have been playing a stingray for years. But I’ve been playing this F much more now, I also did a gig with it, and I have to say I am not disappointed any more. In fact, I’ve really come to love the warm balanced sound it gives.

Not a lot of places keep them in stock. Ish Guitars in New York might be the closest shop with inventory on hand. Fretspot is probably a little far.
