For some reason I feel somewhat guilty about using only the neck pu on my BN5 lately, but dayum does it sound good with a rock band
I wouldn't, my BN4 cops one of the better "P" tones of any bass, P or not, that I've played.
I know that string choice has been talked about in this thread in the past, but I thought I might bring it up again and see what you guys are using these days. I keep trying to like the F Bass strings, but no matter what I do they always have weird overtones and warbling in the upper register that I can't get rid of. I've been using Dunlop Super Bright Nickels on my BN4, but just ordered a hand full of different DR stainless strings to try out. I ordered High Beams, Fat Beams, and Low Riders to try out as I'm more of a SS round wound kind of guy.

D'addario all day. They are inexpensive, they feel good and are available almost anywhere.
I switched to Kalium strings a while ago and haven't looked back, much happier with the balanced tension and tactile feel of the strings. I use the hybrids, which are more nickel and smoother, but they also have SS strings as well now.

Seems the store is still being worked on. Last time I ordered, I got individual strings to make up the sets so I could order in bulk and get the volume discounts, just an fyi, but you can still order one set at a time.
Hey guys!! Marcel told me 3 more weeks to finish my VF4, so excited, i can't wait, i got so many expectations on this one, especially about playability and comfort, i put a BN neck cause when i tested a BN4 a few month ago, the feeling was crazy!!!!

The weird overtones and warbling you hear as you play up the fingerboard are because the magnets in the BN pickups are much stronger than most jazz-style pickups. When we press down the strings up the fingerboard, it puts the strings close enough to the magnets that the magnets pull on the string, causing it to vibrate unusually and make those tones.
If you lower your neck pickup a bit, it puts the magnets further from the strings which helps, but it may also affect the tone of the bass when other notes are being played. When my strings are fresh, I roll back the passive tone know to help mitigate the overtones. When my strings are broken in, the warbliness goes away.
That said, I sure like Fat Beams and High beams, but for my BN5 I like Ken Smith Slap Masters. They had an extra, super light string set that sounded great, played wonderfully, especially when tapping, and they were so light that there was no warbliness with them. But they've discontinued that really light gauge now.
Another reason I use Kalium Strings, they have just about any gauge you might want. I'm using a .102, .076, .057, .041 set right now - great for slap and tapping.
