Club Fbass (thread 13)

Sweet basses! That really makes me want to install the pickup cover on my VF5. Yours looks killer.

Thanks man. I love that cover. I don't know why but I do:) I say do it just make sure you get George and the gang to do it. The ones they have seem more solid to me than the usual ones. I know it's for sure a thicker material than the one on my 70's jazz.

Quick iPhone shot from today's rehearsal. Always blows me away how good these basses sound:)

Dave Hughes posted another video. He plays a fretless BN5 (a BNF5 I should say), and makes it look so easy... great playing, great tone.

Ha! I was just going to post it and you beat me to it!

Unfortunately Billboard Live supplied a Hartke 410 cab and a GK amp, neither are very high on my list of favorites...but thanks to the onboard EQ and playing with the pickup balance I got a sound I was comfortable with.

For those of you who are interested I'll share a few details about the bass; everything is standard except the string spacing is 18mm and nut width 51mm. Neck has 'slim' profile and the finish is antique burst with satin sheen. Neck is five piece maple with ebony veneers. I use F Bass strings and the pickups are the new Aguilar noiseless. It is very light and probably the most comfortable and best playing bass I've ever played! I keep the neck straight and play with a pretty light touch. I've found that is the key to getting the right amount and type of fretless growl...along with full volume on the bridge PU and backing off a bit on the neck PU.

I am really curious about the Aguilar pickups. George has made his own pickups all this time, hasn't he? I'm amazed that this stopped for Aguilar.

Hey Tom7. I can't speak for putting them in a BN series but I have them in my VFPJ and they are sick!!!! I'm actually considering installing a set in my VF5 as well. Super clear sounding but can also get nice and aggressive if you lean into them. Pedals love them. Originally I had an Fbass pickup in the bridge but I changed over when George suggested it and haven't looked back.

That is so interesting to me. Thanks.

When I'm playing in a cover band, if we are playing a song just as the original was recorded note for note, then I feel like my voice in the song is my tone and technique, and that makes me keenly interested in gear that sounds great.

And if I'm playing a song where the bass line is mine to create, I'm likewise intent on making sure my voice is an impressive one.

This goal keeps me on a perpetual lookout for players with great playing and great tone, (which is why I love David Hughes's albums so much by the way). So when I see two of my all time favorite tone heroes veer from a path I know to be fantastic, I've got to learn more about that new path.
