Club Fbass (thread 13)

Others will have more input, but I believe a large part of "that tone" is indeed the VF. There are a few well produced songs out there right now with similar tone that sounds great (to my ears anyway).

Some that come to mind. First player is Alex St Kitts, the 2nd is Dave McMillan, who's actually both a TB and F-Bass club member. Dave has posted some info in this thread way back on how he got some of his tone, if it works for you.

Seeing that Fender with an FBass gig bag reminds me of something that happened years ago.

True story. I saw my first FBass here on talk bass; a photo of a BN5. The enhanced wood grain, wood pickup covers, and the body shape were just gorgeous. In fact, I thought it was the prettiest bass I'd ever seen. I did research and found that they are much more than a pretty face, so I wanted to try one.

I walked into Mammoth Music in Anchorage and not seeing any hanging from the wall, I asked an employee if they carried FBasses, or could order me one.

He scoffed and looked at me like I was an idiot and said, "You mean Fender basses. Yeah, they are over here."

"No," I responded politely, "I mean FBass...."

Before I could say any more, he interrupted me and said, "It's FENDER. They use an F for the logo, but the company is Fender."

I replied, "Actually, Fender uses the entire word 'Fender' for their logo. FBasses are different. It is a brand of high-end, boutique basses made by a guy named George Furlanetto. I'm looking for an FBass."

His superiority complex turned to contempt as he sneered, "There is no such thing as FBasses; you don't know what you are talking about. I play bass and I know: you mean Fender basses, and they are right here."

I didn't argue, but I did enjoy the look on his face when he noticed the logo was the word Fender and not the letter F.

Weeks later I returned to Mammoth Music with my newly arrived FBass in hand, and searched out that employee. When I found him I said, "Here, this will interest you." I walked him over to the bass amps and took out my BN5.

There were gasps around us, and a "crowd" of 4 others came to check it out. One of the people was their store manager; a good guy by the way.

I started talking about the 34.5 inch scale length for a better B-string, the push / pull hum cancelling pickups, and someone else commented on the pickup covers. We all agreed it had a beautiful shape, and the wood was striking.

I asked the employee who said he was a bass player if he wanted to try it. He declined. I plugged in and did Portrait of Tracy, then some Marcus Miller riffs to show off its slap tone.

I also took advantage of the situation to (politely) tell the store manager that I was in weeks ago wanting to buy an FBass BN5, and that this employee "helped" me. I said since he'd never heard of FBass, I thought I'd bring mine in.

Someone from group of spectators asked me if I was in a band yet, and if not, what would I think of being in a blues band. Before I could answer, that employee just turned and walked away without saying anything.

BTW, I declined on the band invitation; I didn't live in Anchorage but outside of it, and I had too busy a schedule to add another commitment.

At any rate, that Fender vs. FBass confusion on the Steve Bailey model reminded me of that story.

So you guys help a noob out concerning the sound of that VF in the above video... is that the bass, the equipment it is being ran through, or some combination of the two giving it that particular tone?

That video is a production made by Berklee students in Berklee studios (the singer and the engineer/guitar player are friends of mine), so the bass and everything else have been processed and mixed by the engineer. Btw, I agree that the bass sound is great :)

Hi all,

Just an "almost Christmas" thread bump, and a question for everyone here: what's your go-to amp and cab combination at the moment?

I currently have the eden 410xlt & LMIII that I picked up when I first started playing. I'm now in the market for a better (and smaller) cab.

Today, I'm leaning towards a pair of Audiokinesis tc112s - they would serve double duty as mains for basement studio jamming etc. But then I'll read a thread on fearful, or watch the Ed friedland video on his f112, and I'm back on the fence.

As I'm only closing in on 2 years of playing, I haven't yet arrived at "my tone". This is partially why I went with a BN6, for versatility, and why I'm interested in a relatively flat (and thus versatile) cab. I'd rather do the coloring with fx or eq when necessary.

Very interested to hear what you guys like along with your BNs, and any input & suggestions you may have for me.

(as an aside, I recently picked up a pair of shure se535s. After some messing around with tips, I'm quite impressed with them. My wife's band has gone all IEM, and since there is both gear and musician overlap with my own band, it's likely we'll be primarily IEM once things get rolling. I don't think this will eliminate the need for a proper setup, but I'm not sure...)

My main amp is a Markbass 2x10 all-in-one unit - frankly, it's as powerful as I've ever needed, as anything large (festival stage or large bar) will typically have a sound system and board to run through (the Direct Out is also handy). Snappy and punchy, this unit is also lightweight (around 40 lbs). For smaller jazz gigs and home practicing, I picked up a Gallien-Krueger 1x12 MB150s. Not my favourite sound (though great with my upright), but the portability factor is handy when loading gear into my Fiat!

Picked this BN6 up from the factory in Hamilton and had a Mac Ebony ramp added. Plays beautifully and feels great; like most FBasses, the pictures don't do the grain any justice...

Has anybody experimented with different pickups on their VF-models? I have heard great things about Fbass's own pickups, but would be also interested in hearing about other pickups also! I have Aguilar hum-cancelling models, but I feel that they lack a little bit of that "old school warmth".
