Club Fbass (thread 13)

Hi guys, just made a simple vids as my love expressions for my Fbasses.
BN5.
VF5.

I like how in the first video, you put your hand over the G string like you are going to pluck it, then restrain yourself and move on without that extra, percussive pop. Anyway, both were well done and I enjoyed them; thanks for posting them here.

In addition to the response from @zortation , you may want to consider talking to George or Marcel directly for their input. There have been a few tweaks to the VF neck/body construction over the years, and if I remember correctly, these changes affected how similar they are to the "classic" jazz tone you may (or may not) be looking for.

Unfortunately I can't remember whether the earlier or later designs would be what you're after - Perhaps someone else can chime in as well.

I appreciate all the input guys! I reached out to F Bass directly, but haven't received a response. Has anyone swapped out their F Bass Singles for different pups (Nords, Duncan, EMG,)? I should be able to estimate if the Aguilar Swap will work from those specs... Thanks!

David Hughes has a few YouTube videos comparing Aguilar pickups to the stock F-Bass pickups.

It's a BN not VF, but might give you idea. Here's the first one:

Edit: just realized that first one is pretty boring... These are more interesting

Hi all,

Just an "almost Christmas" thread bump, and a question for everyone here: what's your go-to amp and cab combination at the moment?

I currently have the eden 410xlt & LMIII that I picked up when I first started playing. I'm now in the market for a better (and smaller) cab.

Today, I'm leaning towards a pair of Audiokinesis tc112s - they would serve double duty as mains for basement studio jamming etc. But then I'll read a thread on fearful, or watch the Ed friedland video on his f112, and I'm back on the fence.

As I'm only closing in on 2 years of playing, I haven't yet arrived at "my tone". This is partially why I went with a BN6, for versatility, and why I'm interested in a relatively flat (and thus versatile) cab. I'd rather do the coloring with fx or eq when necessary.

Very interested to hear what you guys like along with your BNs, and any input & suggestions you may have for me.

(as an aside, I recently picked up a pair of shure se535s. After some messing around with tips, I'm quite impressed with them. My wife's band has gone all IEM, and since there is both gear and musician overlap with my own band, it's likely we'll be primarily IEM once things get rolling. I don't think this will eliminate the need for a proper setup, but I'm not sure...)

I'd like to hear what people say too.

My practice amp is a Roland Cube.

The amp in our rehearsal room is Carvin 600w. It has an old school SWR vibe.

When we play small, intimate venues we all play through Bose L1 PA columns, even the drummer who plays on high end electronic drums by Roland so we have complete control of our volume and sound. These Boses are very clean, and let us hear each other extremely well as we play. But while the guitarists have to color tone heavily with pedals, I play FBasses and have beautiful tone from the get go.

When I play larger venues, I have a tube amp head, a Demeter HB600, and an 88 lbs Accugroove El Whappo cabinet. I don't know if either are being sold still, but I *love* them, and haven't felt a need to move to the more modern alternatives -- especially since I am a very part time bassist.

Acme

$1500 will get you a brand new pair of Acme Low B-2. That setup will allow you to play any gig anywhere. But if you go that route you'll need an excellent sounding amp that can push 1000 watts, because he uses high excursion woofers that suck massive amounts of juice. Also if you're a big slapper I would not recommend them, they have big booty.

I sold my BN years ago, but I play my AC and VF through an Acoustic Image Focus 2, and an Accugroove Tri-115 for big gigs where I need to make the earth move, or a Yamaha 12" cab for smaller gigs....

To Tom7's point about more modern alternatives... I think the Acoustic Image holds its own against anything, period.
The Accugroove is a bit big but still sounds better than all the other cabs I directly A/B'd it against to date.
