I chatted with YJ last night and for the first time he actually indicated that the idea is something he's been toying with for a while(!). P-style pickguard as on the P-Classic V, split shaft pots for 2V/2T control, it seems to be in the works, and although he hopes for the final design and images to be posted to be a big surprise, for those who may want a P-Classic V with much more tonal control in the next logical step of design, we may be able to expect the first completed prototype by summertime. Stay tuned ;)

Hi everyone, just got this bass from YJ a few weeks ago...turned out beautifully! My first Moollon (J-Classic 5) is a few years old now and it's also a keeper. Over the last few years working with Moollon , and specifically Andi Roselund (Ultradust) and Young Joon has been a great experience including having their friendship.

Lately I've been going back between 4 and 5s and this bass fits the bill for filling that slot. It def stands up to my 66:) . Thanks to Andi for all his great patience and help and to YJ for the amazing work.

I have a Moollon Classic J-IV that I am selling for $1800 It's a beautiful candy apple red. It's virtually new. When I ordered it I ran across another bass which I fell in love with and have only used the Moollon about 3-5 times. Everything is in excellent, new condition. Unfortunately there are two nicks on the side of the bass (not really visible). The front and back are still completely intact. Due to a difference in humidity level between the bass' country of origin and my hometown of Los Angeles I had the bass set up the well known Mo (well known on TB) of Nordstrand. The neck was adjusted and the frets were dressed. Feel free to get an independent opinion from Mo.

It's a nice comparison video but the Mendel's SDuncan pickup is so narrow in terms of the tone that I was not a bit surprised the Moollon would have a much wider frequency response. Putting it up against a Fender AVRI or custom shop with the Pure Vintage pickups would be a much more interesting comparison IMO.

Great point. Put it against a Pino or Hurley (which that color reminds me of)

Ill be the one to be sold bold as to say my Classic Vibe 60's Precision can hang in the tone department with that Moolon Classic P better than the Mendel. No its not a so called hand made instrument with nitro finish like the Moolon but the pickups are voiced similiarly. Still well made. I think the 2012 and later American Standards would compare quite nicely too in the tone department. A better comparison for Scott would be on his Fender Custom Shop Bass of Doom. But it seems to me he now has 2 basses that capture that vintage pre cbs fender tone but lack the playability that he is after. And the Nate has the playability comfort but not the tone. Perhaps a neck swap might be in order for him. The Mendel neck on the CS body. i know that would be heresy to some. But you get what Im saying.

I can't deny it. Those Moolons do sound and look great. I would have to have a custom neck myself . I can't handle those wide, chunky necks .

Well yes - The Mendel has a SD pickup which is voiced to be narrow like that. In terms of hanging, I think the detail in the mids on the SD would probably be better than a squier's pickups if you compared both in the studio and not over youtube. The SD's voicing is really more optimal for rock music where you want that narrow, focused midrange to poke through big guitars.

That's why I was saying the matchup to check would be the AVRI v the Moollon. Same basic pricepoint and you can compare 2 pre cbs style P's that are essentially voiced to do the same thing.

I have the AVRI, and I had a moollon, but it was a J. I can say it was the best vintage J tone I had, but I just got sick of J's, so I sold it. If it was a 4 string P, I probably never would have sold it, but now I have an AVRI which I got for a great deal so it all worked out.

On your other point, I definitely get what you are saying. I just did a pickup swap on my other P - a classic 50's that I got for under 600. I put a Dimarzzio Split P in it. That really added a unique twist to the sound - more sustain, a little more of an even note response that makes solos sing a lot more than the more tic tac tone with a regular P pickup. I love the neck on this bass a lot. It is wide, but not as deep as the AVRI or a Moollon P. I could see myself getting a wild hair one day and putting a Mendel neck on it. That could be an incredibly cool bass.

If I had a Mendel, I'd swap the pickup out for a Split P. But that's just me. I like having a classic P bass and than one that's a little more uniquely voiced and modded to be my own thing. The Mendel and Classic P's are fantastic basses for such projects.
