What has not been mentioned is that you can request the truss rod access carve if you want it...I had that done on my Moollons off the bat. I think YJ prefers not to as standard but its been no problem to have it.

Yes I believe they did it at the factory.....it just makes everything so much easier in my Canadian climate

So, who knows anything about this Moollon P5 with the dual-coil humbucker from NAMM? I am aware that Moollon exists, and Tim Lefebvre from the Tedeschi Trucks Band uses them, but their website does not have a lot of information.

Anyone want to fill me in?

I played most of the Moollon instruments at NAMM, and the P5 was definitely my favorite. It is the best 5-string P I've ever had my hands on, by far. I would just contact the company directly if you're interested in one.

Depending where you live I was told by Andi that humidity " can be" a problem depending where you live and store your instrument...remember there are no authorized dealers to do your repairs!

Hi folks.

With post NAMM adjustment and the extended Lunar New Year Holiday, YJ and I were both away with our respective families and out of the shop (Hyungwoo is still on the West Coast with his wife), so we're slowly getting back to quite a mountain of email and request your patience if a reply has yet to be given to your inquiry. We hope to be all caught up and back in order by the weekend!

Although the P-Classic V is not listed on the Moollon site, it is an official product in regular production and we have no less than a dozen bodies all ready for assembly and setup (roughly 6 week wait at this moment). Standard finishes are $2699, with $100 and $200 surcharges for metallic and sparkle finishes, respectively. Parchment, White, and Tortoise guards are available, and prices include soft or hardshell case and shipping.

Thanks to P-Classic V player Jesse Stern for sharing some of his pics with us, his being an Ocean Turquoise Metallic P-V that can look rather Ice Blue Metallic under the right lighting, as you can see below. Also featured in the collage are John Bartlett's Chocolate 3TS and Burniss Earl Travis II's Purple Sparkle P-V.

Just for reference's sake, presently in stock are:
Standard finishes: 3TS, Black, Vintage White, Dakota Red
Metallic Finishes: Candy Apple Red, Lake Placid Blue
Sparkle Finishes: Root Beer Sparkle


One last thing to note is that the body width is the same as all P-Classic IVs (unlike the larger J-Classic Vs), and accordingly the overall weight tends to be slightly lighter than J-Vs.

Ah yes, of course.

Kindly note that I'm a clueless commercial composer who happens to also have been associated with Moollon since 2008, so much of the following is simply a translation of my conversations with YJ and from playing Moollons regularly in my studio and in the shop, not personal hands-on experience in R&D.

So anyway, we had received a lot of requests for a P-V over the years, but the idea itself was a little more challenging of a concept for YJ to even want to attempt, the reason being that he had already decided not to do a 2+3 split coil P-Classic V after doing a lot of design and testing work.

YJ feels that in both principle and also from extensive personal testing that the unequal winding of the coil around a 3+2 set of magnets produces too different of a sonic field to create a balanced timbre between the two "sets" of strings, even with variation in the coil, magnet use, and number of windings. In essence, even with unequal winds around two bobbins nonetheless resulting in similar induction, they're not going to produce identical tonal qualities that a classic 2+2 split-coil Precision Bass pickup wound in series can.

We admit that there are some fine 5-string Precision Bass-style builders out there doing some excellent work that will satiate most players, but unfortunately it's a design that YJ believes is inherently not theoretically optimal if a vintage Precision Bass tone is in mind, nor reasonably comparable to the sonic balance of any vintage-voiced 4-string Precision Bass for that matter.

The resulting "soapbar" humbucking pickup on the P-Classic V is the same basic design as the two featured on the Moollon B524, which was developed by YJ around the same time as the P-Classic V. Of course unlike the B524, the P-Classic V's pickup is in "P" position and wound a tad warmer (nonetheless just to approx. 10.5k ohm "vintage Precision Bass resistance") and as such, unlike the P-Classic IV, YJ is not billing it as a 100% vintage-voiced instrument, but rather a hybrid 5-stringed Precision with a lot of vintage soul; YJ's magic recipe for Pre-CBS-spec tuner, bridge, saddle, and even screw alloys as found on all Moollons once again delivering the overall package to keep the B string nice and overwhelmingly tight (one of the J-Classic V's main selling points) in addition to having great timbre balance across all strings. The P-Classic V fortunately garnered enough attention after its debut at Winter NAMM 2015 and just enough subsequent fans to keep it in production since. But it's not a lot...From my count, I think only a total of 12 have been built so far.

Hey just to chip-in, I have B524 at home and those "soapbar" humbucking pickups are just great... you can check the sound on my small review... hope you'll get how it sounds. Not sure if position is same as P but listen sounds great.

The p classic 5 is such a uniqe bass. Definitely fendery, yes. but it truly has its own thing going on. I think moollon should make a 4 with the same style pickup!

Wow...perfect. I mean wow. I would use that for everything that isn't with my 6 string or upright. I've always preferred single pickup basses. That sounds beautiful. Bravo! Now to start saving!
