Similar experience there sonically to the ‘63 - thunderous lows meets character filled mids. Sorry to say I’m just not getting the same from the moollon pickup. Maybe the previous owner swapped it out (I haven’t looked under the hood yet) or maybe it’s just not for me. Regardless, I feel I am going to need to swap this out to truly love the bass, hopeful this is the case, as feel wise I am blown away. I am just wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience and if so if there are any recommendations for what I should swap out to, do I just go with the pure vintage ‘63 that I know and trust, or is there anyone familiar with this pickup that could point me in a similar sonic direction that better compliments the moollon? I have no qualms with my Moollon P’s stock pickup. I have the pure vintage ‘63 pickups in my fender P, and those do sound a bit more modern. But the moollon pickups get the vintage tone I wanted out of that instrument. I’d first check to see what pickups you have in there. Play with different strings, new set up, alter the pickup height, all BEFORE buying a new pickup.

That’s it, I think it was that initial underwhelming feeling that got me jumping to conclusions of how to deal with it - not always the most rational option. Now that I’ve cooled down, looking at the pickup height I feel like it’s a simple fix!

You will probably need to adjust pickup height, but first settle on the string set you really want, then do the height. For rounds, I think YJ ships new basses with DR Pure Blues. I use those alot when not using flats. However, if you like a real bright string, I recently found Curt Mangan rounds, and I currently have those on the 56 Moollon P. I really like them.

Dear Club Moollon, I just played an amazing Moolon J5. Only question was the slight head dive, enough to be noticeable and mildly fatiguing while sitting or standing. I assume it is the vintage Moollon-made tuners. Anyone have experience replacing the tuners with Hipshot lightweight tuners and the can speak to whether it addressed the neckdive? Thanks.

my P5 has head dive for sure. I recommend getting a strap that is very grippy on your shoulder rather than replacing hardware as YJ says it’s part of the perfect formula and I believe him.

Oh, really? He believes the heavier tuners are part of the key to the sound of his basses? Interesting. MTD places a brass weight in the headstock of some of their basses to reduce dead spots. Maybe it's a similar angle.

he even makes them himself. I trust the chef at Moollon. It’s a fantastic sounding bass. J5 could be next for me.
