Hey guys, if I can ask a favor...
Does anybody know if Moollon basses have a "standard" 13 hole pickguard? I want to have a gold guard make for an upcoming build, and the first plan is to buy a guard and send it to tone-guard to have it made...if it's just a matter of asking for a standard 13 hole pattern though, it would simplify things as opposed to having to 'import' a guard from Moollon.

Mine are 13 hole, but not sure if "Standard" by any description.
Yeah I put that in quotes because I understand there is a slight difference in MIM vs MIA pickguards, AVRI guards etc… wasn't sure if some knowledgeable soul perhaps knew off the top.
Andi has been super helpful as always, I'm sure he’s flooded with messages to respond to, so I thought I'd spare him this one.
Worst to worst I spend the bucks and get a guard as a template.

I have a second Moollon P pickguard that I sometimes swap out. If you'd like to borrow it to make a template, I'd be happy to mail it to you.
Hey guys, @600 Ohms was VERY kind in lending me his pickguard to send to Tone Guard to make an anodized Moollon guard. I wanted to mention that, if anyone has dreamed of a Moollon specific anodized 13 hole P (this way you could also have it be interchangeable with other Moollon pickguards), I've paid the $175 CAD fee to create a file that others can use as well. Wayne at Tone Guard has been awesome, and I'm sure he'd rather make a "batch" of anodized gold guards now that he will have the CAD file. He'll send it to me when my guard is done and of course I can disseminate it at will, but thought I'd mention it in case anybody wanted to do the same but didn't want to bite the initial bullet of paying the fee.

Happy to help the community. And at the very least, I now know where to get a pickguard made locally that will be a perfect fit.
For those who have a J-V, how is the B string?
I have a J-IV on order that is probably 3 years out, and I was wondering if I should leave it as is, or ask Andi if I can change the order to a 5-string.

I thought it was a superb B string, especially in that it retained the overall tone of the bass. I was never disappointed.

Greetings, everyone. Thank you for waiting to finally hear word from us about the status of things, which has been rather challenging to express all at once like this.
1. YJ has now been back in the shop for a few months after a serious infection that put him in and out of the hospital from around September until early this year.
2. As many of you can surmise from the above and lack of notices etc., it all but put a halt on work in progress, which we all know was already quite beleaguered to begin with.
3. Work is currently steady but still very slow for YJ, who is simply trying to get orders from 4+ years (and some well beyond that) worked on and completed.
4. YJ's most recent notice to me is the most important bit at present: that the very details that were discontinued just few years back but are nonetheless in-progress on already-placed orders are a big part of his ongoing difficulties: neck trim (including metallic finishes on matching in headstocks, and remaining order with fretboard blocks and neck binding), aging/relic work, and a few other things.
5. As such, YJ is needing to make a compromise )with customers' permission) when it comes to working on basses, which is not something he wants to do, but needs to keep production moving forward as best he can. Complaints for orders not being able to complete order in 100% sequence is something we've received before and have addressed it as such, but this is a little different, being out of necessity for overall progress.
6. The big request as such (and I will be reaching out to everyone waiting on this matter) is for customers when possible to forgo the aforementioned "upcharge details" when acceptable, so that their orders can be completed sooner than later. In short, this basically means simplifying specs to non-metallic finishes (i.e. shell pink, olympic white, black, 3TS, sonic blue, surf green, fiesta red, dakota red, etc.) with clearcoat headstocks, no neck trim, and no aging/relic work whatsoever. Truss access is not affected.
7. Many of you already have orders in progress with non-metallic finishes and plain makassar board or maple necks, and as such are not affected by YJ's request. YJ confirmed that I am free to discuss with customers if they would like to change their orders to “more plain specs” for faster completion, but again, I simply don’t know how long things will take.
Along these lines, we also fully understand everyone’s ongoing frustration, and all requests for their deposit refund will be honored, as always.
We would rather not keep people in the dark regarding these unfortunately lengthy completion times, but YJ has assured me that his recovery of health, return to a normal build schedule, and fate of Moollon for that matter is something that we should not worry about. But alas, everyone’s frustration is warranted and I regret that I cannot pass on better news at this time.
Again by all means, if you’d like to cancel your order and have the deposit refunded, we will respect your choice, and only would like to ask that folks be alright waiting upwards of a week for him to move funds over to PayPal and then have it cleared. Note: bank transfer may take a tad longer, since YJ does not do banking at home or on his phone...he has to go personally to the bank and file the wire transfer.
And lastly with our thanks for your understanding and a wink from YJ himself, kindly keep in mind that Moollon has been a 100% deficit endeavor for him since 2001, and although he has no way to make it a profitable business as solo luthier of everything, he still feels his "gain" is in you all: And of course the music made, and that which will continue to be made through everyone in the Moollon family who has appreciated the work he does. And to that end, YJ is pressing on to keep doing what he loves.
In the meantime, the mountain of email is being addressed as best we can, and we apologize for all matters of silence over the past several months.

I hope all is well. Some of this stuff (along with product changes and my own bass collection) has dampened my desire for a Moollon, but I hope it is only onward and upward for the operation.

I'm just catchin up here, it's been awhile. 3-4 year wait? That's crazy, yet I understand with all things considered. I think my wait was 10 months?? for my P and that was tough then. But finding a matching used J in the wait time made it much easier though. I feel very lucky.

Has anyone measure the weight on the YJ made tuning machines? Having some back issues and wondering if res o lites are even worth it
Funny to read through this thread as I have my 2nd Moollon J coming and also have an extremely nice Japanese metro J5.
They are just two completely different things. I love the sadowsky for its hi-fi smooth jazz/fusion sound that brings me back to the 90s. The build is sensational but yes, sadowskys are not mojo basses. Also the 5 string version of the sadowsky is very light in the hands. My moollon J5 I owned was heavier and not the same thing at all in terms of tone. I preferred the moollon for many things ,but the sadowsky is a complete joy to play for many reasons as well.
I think this stuff boils down to taste and also what kind of music you play. I mainly produce now and don’t tour so my rock days are over. I record on neo soul and funk records and make house music. If you all know Fred Falke he was a fender guy and also used a sadowsky 5. A lot of this for me matters the vibe of the track and also what kick drum is driving it. It’s a whole different thing sitting in the mix properly with a 909 opposed to a real kit.
So for me these are such different basses that I personally love having both sounds and would never really compare them. All that said I love the warm thickness of a vintage Fender so much and the Moollon’s are just the vibiest. I have a great preamp in the Jad Freer Capo where I can Eq in some weight and add saturation to the tone ( amazing on passive basses) and that hits a neve pre into an 1176 before conversion. So needless to say, this moollon J is going to be sound absolutely awesome. I’ll be playing it constantly.
Shout out to the Moollon crew, I was one of the members in the early pages of this thread so it’s good to be back.

Dude no. Sell me your Moollon before doing that change. It will kill the tone of the entire instrument.
