Well this is funny:

I've been struggling with the Fat Stacks in my alder/ebony fretless. They're just too polite and lacking the "snarkiness" of the Big Single which I love so much.

I was going to swap in a set of BSs, but Kevin at sadowsky suggested changing the wiring so I can run them as single coils before giving up on them. I got the instructions from Nordstrand and today I took it to my tech's place to have it done. He opens the rear cavity, takes a look, gets a confused look on his face, flips the bass over, pulls up on the volume knob... which pops into a second position and switches the pickups to single coil mode :o

I've had that bass for a year and I had no idea it had a 2 position switch on the volume pot! DOH!!

Switching the FS to SC mode has made a HUGE difference. It sounds SO MUCH better! Its got some stones now.
I'm going to live with it for a while and see if I'm totally happy. I still may end up with a set of BSs. I'm definitely a lot happier today than I was yesterday :D

Cool. Hope you like the SC mode and dont need to do a swap. Would really like to play that fretless, BTW. I miss my fretless vintage 4. It rocked. Remember the neck on that one?

See what I am talking about? This board doesnt hold a candle to Bluesycat, Eaglemoon and Pablo Basso's boards. Not that mine is bad (and I love my blocks and vintage tint) but theirs are in a different league. Like I said I am happy with my Bass but my jaw drops when I look @ the other ones. Very Nice.

I love the blocks on your board. If the BE was "too flashy", it might clash with the blocks? No? You got a great looking board and bass!

Late to the party, but:

My home rehearsal rig is now a MarkBass SD800 (overkill, I know). With roundwound strings through my tweetered Bergantino HT112ER, I use treble boost plus VTC. With flatwound strings, I think the VLE sounds better. At gigs, when using rounds through my Berg NV610, I use treble boost, with no VTC or VLE required... that's the beauty of tweeterless tens: easy to make them bright (and even dirty) without bringing in excess hiss, squeak, buzz, or other hi-frequency noise. :)

The first time I heard "VTC" I had to doublecheck to make sure it did indeed refer to a passive tone control... but I realized the name makes sense, as the boost-only treble and bass controls are "modern" tone controls.

I've never had a problem with the Sadowsky string tree. Note that it doesn't have to exert much pressure to work.... a shallow bend is all that's required. If strings are hanging on one, I'd wonder if it was set too low.

Exactly! I saw that pic on my phone and my office and said "Holy......". Good thing I work in a private office and not in a cubicle farm or something. I would have been seriously busted. What an amazing bass!

Yeah, but with those big blocks, I'm not sure I'd like the super dense figure. Plus, I'd think you wouldn't want to "spend" the most figured piece when you're gonna' cut a bunch of it out. :) Anyway, looks great and classy to me. :)

I don't think they're clay, but they do look clay-like. My first 2 sadowskys were maple boards, so it was a pleasant surprise to see these dots on the dark boards. I like them.

You get a decent idea how they look against the ebony on my fretless:

I think it looks gorgeous just like it is. I agree that having too much birdseye with the blocks would be overkill. It's subtle without being pretentious. :)

Holy Antique Shoreline Gold Batman!!!! However, it has a P neck which I want no part of! My Fender P goes for sale once I get a Sad PJ.
