I finally got to try (live setting) the SC's I got from Mike, in my MV5. While some pickups may work better with certain basses, these seem like they were made for mine. The difference between the HC's that were in it and the SC's, is very noticeable. So much so, more than one person in the band made mention of it without knowing about the change. Besides the fact they are very quiet, (even when slightly favoring the bridge pickup) I LOVE they way they sound on my particular instrument.
As a side note, I had changed the 250k volume pot to a 500k with nice results when I used the HC's. After a A/B session with both with the SC's, the 250k sounded better with my particular wood combo. I'm sure with others the 500k might be the ticket.

Your experiences totally mimic mine with the SC vs HC thing in the MV5. Interesting that you went back to the 250K tho... there could be something to that... I can't remember if I changed my older bass out or not, but if I did, I may switch back just to see. Thanks for the perspective.

When I bought the MV5, I sold my M5-24 to finance it. In hindsight, it was a BAD decision. The neck on it was to die for! Anyway, another thing I missed was that strong mid presence. While nothing will replace those big soapbars in the modern position, the SC's with the 250k pot, along with a ash/maple combo, gets my bass close enough to where I'm extremely pleased with the tone. Again, you may experience different results with your particular instrument. I'm done tinkering, time to go play....:bassist:

Nah, I have a feeling I'll come to the same conclusion you did, since we both seem to be on the same page regarding the J's anyway. However, you're making the right choice going back to the Modern style if you miss that mid presence. There's no way to get that sound from a JJ/PJ model, just as there's no way to get the bigger rounder sound out of that dual bucker closer to the bridge config on the Moderns.

Stick with what fits you best. :)

One nice thing about the JJ with the SC's is, the notes on the G string seem fuller. To me, that is never a bad thing.

My hunch is that the pickguard is altered on PJ basses so it surrounds the split-P pickup more elegantly, and this would give the illusion of the J pup being farther from the bridge.

Or maybe it's just that treble coil on the P pickup causing the illusion.
