I think I would have first heard of them from reading about Will Lee and/or Jason Newsted. I also remember a review in Bass Player about the Metro line when it first was introduced. But it absolutely was TalkBass which sold me on 'em.
Pretty much all the gear I've used over the past 8 or so years has been due to TB, actually.
I first heard of them because of Marcus Miller, Will Lee and Jason Newsted. I was always curious. When I couldn't find a five string bass that felt right, I finally read the reviews on here and got two of them!
I'll never need another bass again... unless I choose to get different Sadowsky basses or add to the collection.

I have a friend that works at Fishman Transducers and he told me about Sadowsky back in the early 90's.
Plus, this Hartke Ad with Tom Hamilton, Uncle Will (w/ Standard 4), Stu Hamm and Jack Bruce.
This digital print was given to me from a friend that knew I was a Stu Hamm fan.
From what I was told it was #2 of 2 made. Hartke has #1.
I bought my first one in '91 in Holland.
I played it in a shop and had to have it.
Until now i've bought 8, the newest one 3 days ago.( sold a few meanwhile)

Back in 2000 when i first got interested in bass playing saw an ad and was just in love, then saw Will Lee and Marcus and other artist and i was sold on them, could not afford them back then, but now thank GOD i can, went to the shop tried a NYC Standard and was blown away at the sound and of course the weight. Loved it so much i went back a month later and put an order in for another, i have to agree with those 2 and 2 Valenti's I don't have any GAS, although those Nordy's and also Alleva-Coppolo's have been in my freakin brain lately, but i will be good and hold off for a while.

I played Mikebasses four sting NYC (Maple standard with a cherry sunburst I believe flame top) right about the time the first Metro's hit the market. And I ordered Metro # 4 of 10 from the first NAMM show run an RV5 in Corsica Blue Metallic with a pearl pickguard
Seeing Newsted playing with Metallica on some VH1 awards show about 10 years ago I believe (they played Fade to Black as some "most requested online song" thing). That sucka just cut through those TV speakers with such authority...I heard that was his last gig with Metallica just recently...

Sadowsky used to have a little (under 1/4 page ad) in the rear section of Bass Player Magazine and one of them had an amazing Quilt Top 5 string in it. Must've been late 80's I think? I saw that ad and had wanted one ever since.

I learned of Sadowsky basses by reading posts here on TB and listening to sound clips here as well. I started chiming in on part 2 of the club well before I placed an order. I wanted a new sound. I had owned Modulus, Warwick, Fender, and Lakland.
I first learned about Sadowsky from this SWR ad from the early 90's
So I knew about Sadowsky but never gave them much thought.
The funny thing, 20+ years later I now own that Sadowsky in the photo!
I heard a local bass player playing a gig here in Brisbane in Oz.
The bass had so much bottom end and presence I had to go find out what it was.

I remember seeing them on magazines, but my first experience was seeing Kermit Driscoll with Bill Frisell, his tone killed me!!! Then after a few years I visited the Sadowsky office in Times Square and fell in love with them!!!
+1. Before the internet, ads on BassPlayer and a lot of its articles where pro players were playing them.
I grabbed one as soon as a Metro arrived to Europe and the rest is history.

I still think that's such a GREAT story ClassicJazz, I bet that bass is KILLER! CONGRATS!!!!

Hah! It's been 6 months so the wait is coming to an end. I'll put a pic up as soon as. Nicer than a block of alder in burst with pup cutouts. She's not dressed yet!
