This was also kind of my second agenda on this bass. I mean, my gosh, the quilt on 5249 was just amazing... one of the most beautiful quilts from a pattern and density standpoint, for my prefs, that I've ever seen anywhere. But there is something to be said about the statement a really nice flame makes, too.

That bass is the standard "modern" NYC 24-5 config. I have essentially the same bass, except that mine has an amboyna burl cap and the RW board is Braz.

IMO, the mahogany/RW combo tends to take just the slightest edge off of an otherwise VERY aggressive tone. The bass is very low-mid heavy with a tight, quick response.

I LOVE this tone. But, be advised it is nothing at all like the more classic-oriented tones of the Sadowsky JJ and PJ configs. It is its own animal for sure.

This vid is pretty indicative of the tone even though it is full of a lot of stuff you may want to skip. My bass sounds very much like this one:

This is the ash/maple version (Metro) so it is a bit more aggressive, but you get the idea.

On a purely aesthetic note, flame maple w/ dark cherry burst is the best looking setup IMO. I have yet to see a single bass with a quilt top that I'd like.

Vic, that's a great looking bass and spec'd really well. That NYC5 with standard JJ positions, SC's, 24 fret, and the 1 3/4 nut is just the cat's pajamas and pretty precisely what I would spec for an NYC 5; though I wouldn't go for quite such a piece of furniture look, but that's just me. Bravo.

I even like this one:p I'm with Chef in general, but the more 'modern' body profile and the 24 frets makes this one a total winner to me aesthetically... a true 'modern J'.

Hey, many thanks. That's very helpful. Modern, clear and pianistic is what I'm after, and it seems to be there.

Looks Like Flame maple is the new Quilted maple :D

Basses are meant to be P or J and sunburst. The only choice you have is whether the board is maple or rosewood. Fancy tops are unecessary and a disguise for poor playing.
If you make the rules like I do then you can slip in an ebony board while noone's looking.
In extreme circumstances white, CAR, black or cream may be allowed.
