I've had the pleasure of meeting Roger a couple times at NAMM and I couldn't agree more!
Basses are meant to be P or J and sunburst. The only choice you have is whether the board is maple or rosewood. Fancy tops are unecessary and a disguise for poor playing.
If you make the rules like I do then you can slip in an ebony board while noone's looking.
In extreme circumstances white, CAR, black or cream may be allowed.
I knew there was a reason I went with a quilt top, I need all the disguises I can get. I even added a birds eye board to further distract from my playing. You can say one thing about the Burks chops, man that bass looks marvelous.

Well, all I can say is, it must work, 'cause I've yet to be fired from a band in 30 years of playing professionally. So I guess it still holds value, right?

Band: "Hey Vic, ya know, this isn't working out, I think we should just break up the band"
Vic: "Really??? hought it was going well, but if everyone agrees....."
Band: "Umm Yeah, we all feel the same....."
Vic: "OK then, I'll just pack up my fancy bass and go" (packs up bass and leaves...)
Band: "You think he bought it??? Yeah!!!"
[2 weeks later]
Vic (on phone to band) "HEY!!! I thought we broke up the band?!?!?"
Band: "We did, but the other guys decided to maybe just get together and just jam with a buddy of theirs- Burk is his name, and it clicked, so we're gonna give it a shot"
Vic: "But..."
Band: "Dude, it has NOTHING to do with you. We broke that band up, this is DIFFERENT. You've been doing this professionally now for years, you understand right???"
Vic: "Umm, yeah, I guess......"
Band: "Hey gotta run, Burk just showed up, gotta burn him a CD and he wants to show us some new fancy topped bass or something..." <click>
Vic: "But...."
