Club Sadowsky!!!

For those with JJ5's who prefer SC's but want the noise reduction of HC's, and may feel they want a little more aggression/grunt than the Sadowsky HC's, I suggest Nordstrand NJ5S pickups.

If I recall correctly, the current JJ5 HC's are based on DiMarzio Ultra-J's. Those are great pickups, but I do think they are a little bit more polite in the mids compared to the SC's, which I think is where our personal prefs differentiate us on these.

I've always felt Nordstrand NJ5S pickups have a bit more aggression and grunt in the mids compared to the DiMarzios. As many likely know, the J in the PJ5 is based on the NJ5S since that pickup set is all Nordstrand now, so it also makes sense that the folks with the PJ5's love those.

I would second this. I installed a set of NJ5SF PUs (same PU build to Fender size specs) in an ASJV and was VERY happy with it. Those PUs are quite mid aggressive and are described as being as close to the single coil tone as possible.

Interesting thoughts on liking the hum cancelling better with the alder/more combo. I am actually exactly the opposite. I find that there is enough going on with the maple FB that I get a pretty true, classic tone out of my HC-loaded ash/maple. But, the recently acquired HC-loaded RV4 is a BIT tame for my taste. Since I use it less generally anyway, I think it is the candidate to become my SC-loaded bass.

Totally agree with that.

IMO, we're splitting hairs.
Played alone when I had SC's in my bass, I could hear a pretty good amount of that grind.
Now with HC's, it's not there (as much), but really on the gig, I'm not sure I could totally tell.

Your personal voice will pretty much always superceed changes in the grand scope of small things like passive Jazz Bass pick-ups.
I mean Vic will always sound like a stoned Marcus Miller. Or sober Bobby Dall.....:hiding:

Really enjoying my first Sadowsky. Played it live at a morning worship service, through my MB F500/ Epifani UL210 rig...

Loud guitar- drums- keyboards... Cut right through and tone to die for. Lots of compliments as well....

And I just ordered a set of Sadowsky 5 string Single Coils to replace the HC's.

Can't wait !!!

Hey guys, I have a stock '72 Fender jazz that I absolutely love. But.....looking to get a little extra out of it (guess I am too use to my Sadowsky basses). So thinking about getting the Sadowsky outboard preamp box.

What should I expect tone wise using that box with a older jazz like I have? And you guys that use them, how do you run them setting wise on the bass and the box?

I almost always use my old school battery sadowsky out board pre with my 66 fender jazz , and I have for years , love it with that bass , I think you will be real happy with it

Can't speak of the J bass but I can't see playing my Fender P w/o it any more. Comparing the Fender / Sad' outboard to my Sad' P bass the Fender still maintains the vintage quality to the sound but thickens & fattens the tone. (flats on the basses)

I find that the signal isn't as hot when the box is run to the bass w/ a regular length of cable.

Just a reminder: there seems to be a consensus that Sadowsky 4 string HCs seem to sound closer to SCs than the Sadowsky 5 string HCs....

+1 I totally agree. I love the HCs in my Standard 4s.
But, liked the SCs in my Standard 5 when I had it.

I've seen SC favored posts for years now and always wondered. And yes, I have read the differences between SC and HC.

SCs are more expensive, so they are not standard on Metros. As for NYCs, you can order SCs without upcharge
