Might be a silly question . . but if SC's are so good then why aren't they standard?

I think Roger commented on this before that (despite the "buzz" (pun intended) here on TB) the HC's are simply the most popular pickups for his customers overall.

+1 I totally agree. I love the HCs in my Standard 4s.
But, liked the SCs in my Standard 5 when I had it.

DiMarzio Area-Js are better than the stock pickups in the 5s. Nordstrand NJ5S don't sound anything like a J-pickup to me, totally modern sound with a shiny and extended, almost electronic sounding top. What I like in my sadowsky 5 is a set of single coils. On the 4 strings, the HCs rock, and the solo'd neck pickup tone is pretty happening and hum-free.

My Sadowsky 4, with drop-D when I need it, is slowly converting a die hard 5 string guy back to using a 4 string almost exclusively.

I almost always use my old school battery sadowsky out board pre with my 66 fender jazz , and I have for years , love it with that bass , I think you will be real happy with it

So let me ask you, as far as on your bass would the tone control act like the VTC? Typically I keep that rolled off on my Sadowsky's unless I am doing some slapping, than I rolled it back in.

Yes, that's exactly the same as the Sad' VTC. The outboard preamp / Fender tone control works the same as the controls on the Sad' bass. The only difference is that it's not as hot. Your Fender J bass will retain it's basic character with added "Sadowsky fatness" & not sound like the Sad' J bass you are familiar with.

The HCs in my RV4 sound very different than the SCs in NYC ash/maple JJ4. This may be due to the wood compliment in my RV4. The RV4 is very mid-forward which typically doesn't fit the tonal profile expected for that bass. It is very much in your face sounding and the guitarists that I've played with complain that that bass is too punchy.

Living where I do I don't get a chance to try and compare so use TB a lot for research.

I think it would be the same idea , cant compare it to my 5 string because when I bought that bass they weren't doing that yet , still need to make that upgrade but that bass always sounds good , and does the old jazz with that pre , I think you will be pleased

Want/need (for now) to get into a light(er) Sadowsky.
4 or 5.
To be honest, I really like this one and DON'T want to move it.
So, it's priced a bit high on purpose.
