Club Sadowsky!!!

I'm gonna start some more home recording in awhile & would appreciate anyone's experience with how they prefer to adjust their Sad' bass vol. pot for recording.
I am so used to having to crank my Fender vol. to avoid degrading the tone. On my Sadowsky it's a different ballgame & I find that even a 50% open pot works well. Sometimes a less than full up output sounds more pleasing to me but my ears aren't as sharp as they used to be so I'll defer to the more experienced of you. Much thanks guys. :bassist:

There is a gorgeous NYC PJ5 in the TB classifieds and now I am broke again. :bawl: I just dropped $2850 on a Tone King Metropolitan guitar head for my hubby....but he does not know it yet....SO SHHHHHHHHH you guys! Be vewwy vewwy quiet. It is arriving tomorrow at my work. How sneaky of me!

Blair, just curious if you have tried recording in passive mode?

Actually recording is somewhat different story to the actual live playing sometimes, simply explore the sounding which suit you the best will do, also, at the stage of mixing and mastering, it is another story again..:bassist:

I record with the volume full on, in active mode, favoring a bit the bridge pickup and adjusting the VTC and tone controls according to the song...

Hi Jerry, Yeah I've tried & now I've come to a nice compromise. It took me a long time to adjust to not boosting the preamp on this puppy w/the flats I play. Flats are a whole different animal on a Sadowsky bass when recording. I much prefer to leave the preamp engaged to give the sound some presence but not boost the bass. The pup pan & VTC do TONS when it comes to tone shaping flats. I always like to keep the P pup in play & "favour" it a lot as well as use detent setting. That VTC is HUGE & small adjustment on an overdub makes for wonderful flavours. I also like to boost the preamp treble a bit if finger style is way up front of the P pup, if the VTC is rolled off some. NICE!

This is a good point Timothy. With live play a lot of players give themselves wiggle room on the bass volume pot so the amp can be punched up & they can bring it on or pull it back at the instrument. I do the same with recording so I don't have to reset all the levels with each overdub tune. When I practice before the recording I make notes of EVERY set level for each song. What I do can't be edited- it's real time, live, start to finish, so I can't eq or compress after the fact because the pre-recorded CD would also take a hit.(that is all set in the mix before I press the button.) My bass volume is limited by the preamp gain set, compressor threshold & all the tweaking & balancing on the Tascam CD unit that I use. I then have to find a recording level to accept it all. I asked my question to see if anyone has had tone falloff on their recordings if the bass was backed off. Thanks Timothy. I would love to hear more of your clips sometime.

Both of Brian's NYC Vintage 5 Basses (Caramel Burst, and 59' Burst) have Ash body's with Brazilian Fingerboards.

I just thought I'd mention the shock and complete surprise on hubby's face when he saw his new TK Metro guitar head! "Oh. My. God." Yep, those were the first words. Then "Is it what I think it is? Oh my God."

Maybe, a 5-string PJ Sadowsky will show up for me some day? :) One can only hope.

Edit: Roger, you need a Tone King Metropolitan amp in your guitar showroom!!! It sounds GREAT!!! The tone is killer!

A gift like that (price aside) is extra special when it means so much to the person getting it. I know other people can understand, but musicians seem to "get it". Great job BC. Your husband is a lucky man! ;)

Thanks. ;) I was having fun hacking away on the guitar last night - trying to play on those little tiny strings hurts! LOL!
I've been teaching myself "Let it Ride" (BTO) and having a blast with that tune.
