I hate to tell you this, but I think you're right, and at some point, I do think you'll need to satisfy that curiosity. However, I also think the Sadowsky will get you pretty well covered for the tone base you're looking for, which means you can take your sweet time waiting for an AC "opportunity" to float your way (like you say below). Always good to be in that position... patient.

Having said that – for some reason I feel the flagship AC instrument is the LG. Unless an RA shacks loose sometime soon, I'll probably go Sad now and perhaps down the road get an LG4.

Well... I think you already know my position on this, right? :) In short, IMHO, you're right, and that's a good plan. I mean, all three models are awesome, but IMHO(!) the LG is the "foundation" model, and my fave... despite my general love for ash bodies with various boards.

But I've never played an AC. I've owned 4 Sadowsky's in the past, and currently own 2. I know what I'm getting with a Sad. That along with the shorter wait time, customization, command of weight I want, figured top, hardware color choice etc... ect... - and they both cost about the same. On paper the Sadowsky wins - I agree.

I'd always looked at A-Cs as a high-end bass I would never want, due to that silly headstock. Then I heard one in a live Jamiroquai vid and ate my words. I'll probably never own one, because my budgetary reality makes my impending Sadowsky my one blowout bass for this lifetime; but I see the A-C as a totally legit choice for someone looking for more of a classic vibe.

Of course, that 'classic vibe' aspect would make it more if a toss up between an A-C and, say, a Lakland or maybe a CS Fender, rather than a Sadowsky...

Exactly...

Everybody here knows what a total freakin' fanboi of Sadowsky I am, and I would consider Jimmy to have the skills to build instruments right on par with that... it's just a different choice option more than anything. In fact, I'd go so far as to say it's the only real choice if you want an absolute best example of an extremely faithful vintage tone, but with the advantages of top of the line instrument quality.

I believe that what really makes a bass "the one" is the woods and how the bass reacts to your touch. Not the builder. I see it more as step 1, pick the builder that offers the features and quality you want, step 2 go play a bunch of them and buy/keep the one you can't put down. For me, sadowskys are great, my keepers both ended up being metros.

You can do a 2 day trip to NYC for $1000 or you can buy and flip 5 or 10 used basses until you find the right one. Either way, a little expensive, but that's how you get basses you at really happy with, by feeling and listening. Not by names or numbers.

Visited the Sadowsky shop and it was awesome! Got to meet Kevin and got a shop tour. I got to play a NYC Modern 5 I really really dig. Also got to meet Lisa, one of the builders! It was really awesome. I need that Modern 5!!!!

Dude......I totally love that bass. I emailed Kevin once that posted and told him that bass makes me want to own another 5er. He agreed with me! Nice!
