They have a little more tension that the blue labels but less tension that DR loriders, they feel a lot like regular ernie balls. I'm liking them a lot...

Oops, I bought another Sadowsky! It's a 2006 UV70 5 that's been making the rounds on TB the past couple months, but it's found a home with me. Got it for price I couldn't pass up. It's the perfect complement to my hybrid PJ 4 with flats and my UV70 4. It will probably get the least play of all of them, but it feels amazing. No trouble at all moving between 4s and 5s so, it might get more attention than I originally thought. The build quality, balance, and feel are amazing.

Played my MV5 (older, 4098) last night at a smaller pub gig... a couple early sets and head back home. But man, it just keeps on killin'. I love that bass so much, and the Tru-oil finish on the neck now just makes it feel SO much better... my gosh.
Hey guys – so I think I’m going to do an NYC build and wondering your thoughts. Some brief background – I owned and loved the tone of my Fender Geddy Lee (alder/maple 70’s). Great take on the 70’s tone, but a bit more round/bloomy vs. the standard ash/maple 70’s style. I also liked the tone of the Alleva Coppolo RA5 which I heard from sound clips – same thing (alder/maple 70’s).
So I’m thinking of doing this in a Sadowsky
Alder Body w/ Quilted Maple Top (maybe Spalted Maple)
Standard Style (non-vintage)
Natural Finish
Maple Fretboard
70’s Pickup Position
Single Coils
Black NYC hardware
And I would spec it around 8.5 lbs.
Thoughts? I’m thinking it should kill for that Alder/Maple 70’s style J.

A couple notes...
Jimmy's basses have special custom wound pickups that are specifically targeted to mimic the tone of each era they are intended to represent, so even with the singles in this bass, it won't be the same as that RA (not better/worse, just different).
Also, Roger's preamp does have a character, it's a good one, but it's not specifically designed to sound just like an older Fender, but with adjustment, where Jimmy's is. Roger's take on things is intended to be an "improvement" over that sound for the intents and purposes of recording and live mix performance, but of course that's a subjective comment as well.
The bottom line is, it depends on what your focus is. A similarly configured Sadowsky will NOT sound like an RA (nor should it, IMHO), so if you're trying to focus primarily on a faithful vintage tone, you're probably better off with the product targeted specifically at that (RA). Otherwise, if you're looking for something designed to start with that sound and make "improvements" from there based on some top working pro feedback, the Sadowsky is probably better suited.
However, I STRONGLY suggest you let gig experiences with both decide what's most important to you. It's amazing how one gig can be a mind-changer. I love both vendor's work like crazy, but these are differently targeted instruments, so you can't just make a call without trying both, and you can't try and make one sound like the other (and IMHO nor should you).

I hear you on all accounts. Kinda tough to gig with both though as the AC is near impossible to get ones hands on.

The other thing to keep in mind, which may or may not matter to you (but definitely does to me) is part of Jimmy's charter in being faithful to the basses of days gone by, is he doesn't do weight reduction stuff. So depending on how important your spec weight is to you, the Sadowsky will likely have no trouble meeting it, but Jimmy might. It's kinda' hard to get a full size J5 bodied bass down to 8.5 pounds.

But I’ve never played an AC. I’ve owned 4 Sadowsky’s in the past, and currently own 2. I know what I’m getting with a Sad. That along with the shorter wait time, customization, command of weight I want, figured top, hardware color choice etc… ect… - and they both cost about the same. On paper the Sadowsky wins – I agree.
I think the lure to an AC will always haunt me though.
Having said that – for some reason I feel the flagship AC instrument is the LG. Unless an RA shacks loose sometime soon, I’ll probably go Sad now and perhaps down the road get an LG4.
