Nice, Lizzy! I gotta come out and check out your bands... and that Sadowsky! Still my favorite tone ever was my old Sadowsky 5-string, but I just couldn't get over the huge neck. I keep wondering if I could love the feel of the 4... though I don't know what band I'd play in where I could get away with just a 4. :(

If I could find a way to get the Sadowsky tone with a Lakland neck I'd be set.

Sadowsky will do a 1 3/4" nut on a 5 string.

I get away with the four in my Top 40 band by using an octave pedal and the Hipshot! ;)

This weekend I'm using the five though, which means doing a bunch of things a little differently, so it's a nice (but temporary!) change up. Hoping to get the new MV4 next Friday and it will go straight to my gig! :D

Well, let me expand on my answer from post #560, then:

My suspicion is that there are more claimed benefits than real ones. I buy the concept that roasting stabilises the hell out of the wood. I just don't think it'll have much of an effect on the sound or dead spots.

I saw some roasted-necked Stingrays at a local store this week-end. they did *look* very nice, but they didn't look at dark as the ones on the Sadowsky site do. I think that, personally, I like the Sadowsky best without even the vintage tint on the headstock. The blond wood with the black logo just says 'Sadowsky' to me. The Music Man look has never really hit me the same way, so I wasn't thrown by the darker neck and headstock.

But I'm really unsure what the real benefit would be in a neck that already had graphite rods in it. I'd personally rather have a quartersawn option than a roasted one.

Roger doesn't seem to do much that isn't very well thought out.
I'm sure he has his own reasons for his roasted necks.

I like the vintage tint, on the one bass I have it on.

I don't like the roasted look: disingenuously dark, to my eye.

ymmv; nice to have choices, etc.

Yes. And I'll add that Roger also doesn't get as bombastic about roasted necks as some others. His claimed benefits come off as a lot more reasonable.
