It is funny how that works , we have a bass we think we will keep forever , then it takes a back seat for a while and we decide to sell . I thought I would never think of selling my 5 string 1998 ash maple Sadowsky . I have gone back to my 4 string basses and have not played the 5's for about two years , just love the 4's and now want another Sad jazz alder rosewood . I am thinking of selling my old SAD 5 and thought I never would . That damm ultra vintage jazz bass on the in stock page is killing me.

? My axe arrived two days ago, and it's got side-by-side pup poles.

EDIT: Oh wait. I think they offer some flavour of Nordstrand pups as an option, though. Or did, at any rate. I remember seeing some Nord pups with diagonal poles... IIRC and all that...

I guess I didn't answer your question at all.

EDIT AGAIN: Aaand I missed the part where you were asking about a P pup.

I'm just going to go sit in the corner.

On the site, they have pj5's with the diagonal poles, and list the pups as Sadowsky pups, not as a nordstrand pups. (despite who may have actually manufactured them)

That's because they're made specially for Roger. But it is true that the pickups with the angled poles are built by Nordstrand and are based on his existing product models... for example, the VP pickup for the P or PJ (possibly the 5 string only on this one... not sure).

I don't think I can comment usefully on any potential tonal diffs between the vendors' standard models and the Sadowsky version, which is moot anyway, since Roger doesn't offer those options (and I wouldn't consider them even if he did), but I can tell you that one of the things Roger has as a requirement is a particularly well shielded pickup, which means the vendor has to add as needed to their standard configuration to meet Roger's specs (varies by pickup model and vendor).

Just another example of how Roger is so especially focused on the practical stuff that matters most to bassists who spend a LOT of time in LOTs of varying environments, so the focus can be solely on performance as much as possible with minimal distraction by equipment. I've personally appreciated this many times myself, and at least to me, it's a BIG deal.

Ok, no room for pride here, right? :) :rollno:

I sold it to help pay for a Peavey MK IV "400W" (into 2 ohms with lots of THD LOL!) and a couple of BW-equipped 1x18" cabs. One was front loaded, and the other was actually a folded horn design. Yeah, it was ridiculous. But at the time I was also playing a Ric 4001 a lot, and those are really scooped, so you really had to throw a lot of SPLs at them to get them to have a presence in a loud rock mix. It was later that I (re)learned how effective a Jazz bass was at this. Sold the Ric and never looked back. I'm guessing that's why Geddy switched too... the J bass just sits in and cuts through a mix SO much better than a Ric (IMHO!!).

I know he's all about his '72 J, but I'd love to see Geddy play and comment on an MV4... maybe even a UV4. :)

Roger will have to confirm, but I believe on models where they appear they are the standard pickup, and Roger would have to comment on if it is possible to order the previous models as an option.

But I trust Roger's tonal decisions so much that I'd always choose to take the standard option he offers anyway. The only "choice" I'd make is between singles and hum cancelling J's.
