I pulled a groin just LOOKING at that! - Wait- let me re-phrase that: I hurt myself just looking at that.Thanks guys. In my past two bands I've been playing guitar and not bass. I just noodle around on bass at home and for sure the full stack is overkill but the head and cab sound amazing. I love the modern hi fi sound of my soapbar bass especially for slap. One bass is enough for me for now(famous last words). And my first love in life is doing this.......

I'm glad to see you're using your time in the service constructively.
So far so good, it's amazing how much better you can get when you play for a minimum of 5 hours a day (slow day, busy day is 8-10hrs). I'm looking forward to hitting my band in the fleet though. Gigs, gigs, gigs, gigs, and quite a bit of traveling.

Oh, you're killing me. I certainly don't "need" one of these. If I was lucky enough to find one, it will cost me likely more than they were new at this point. Plus, this is really on the heavy side for an amp for me.

Hey guys - need a little input. I'm all about the Sadowsky J Bass tone for what I usually play (funk/fusion/jazzy/groove style music)
I'll be playing in a hard de-tuned rock style band and want super tight/punchy finger style tone - and I'll need a 5 String (all my current basses are 4).
So I'm split between an MV5 and a Modern 5
Any thoughts on which would be a better fit for hard rock/ metal ?

Be careful, this is borderline "what's the best bass for metal"?!?! ; )
In my hard rock/heavy metal band, I use my Metro Will Lee. It sits perfectly in the mix w the two heavy guitars. It is ash/maple, which cuts through nicely with those distorted guitars. So, I think an ash/maple MV5 would work fine, while being similar to what you already like.
In regards to the Modern 5, I've only played one for a few minutes while visiting the shop. Others could probably give better advice.
How detuned are we talking by the way?
I'd check out the UVMB70 as well if you like something a bit more aggressive than the MV and like a full-sized body.

^ Thanks for the input guys. I like the UV70's tone, but I feel the 60's J pickups placement has a bit more "gut fundamental", while the 70's Pup placement has more sizzle. I'm looking for more gut punch/fundamental. (I'm also considering a Stingray 5 I know, heresy!)

The only diff in pup placement b/t 60's and 70's is the bridge pup, IIRC.
I'd factor out pickup placement for grunt, unless you plan on favoring the bridge pickup a lot of the time.

^ Not a fan of drop tunning as I don't care for super lose strings. Especially if going to drop C. I'll need a 5 banger for sure.

The pickups placement of the Modern 5 make it seem like it would be more in the realm of punchy/aggressive tone... but input would be great.

I've also had the (mis)fortune of playing one at one point, so I unhappily know what I'm missing, but truth told, I don't think I'd lug one around these days. BUT, the sound... oh my... the sound.There was an SA200 hd that came in to L&M music in T.O. a couple years ago & it was GONE before I had a chance to try it.

I think the modern would fit the bill, though sr5 is a good call too!
See I wish I knew the Modern more... With the SR5 I know what I'll get (and its pretty good for that tone). I know what I'll get with the MV5 as well.
The Modern is elusive to me which makes it alluring.
I kinda think it will be in between a SR tone & MV5 - sorta in the middle... but not sure, just going based on pickup placement.

The bass player for Nickelback uses a Modern 5 but Jason Newsted has been using a 24F jazz bass. So either should work well albeit differently.

I'm going to be a pariah here and suggest you think about something in a 35" scale if you're detuning.
Also, if you're used to the string-spacing of your Sadowsky, then even just the spacing on an MM might throw you off. Or not, but I ended up selling off my basses with tighter string spacing due to comfort issues.
IMHO, YMMV etc.
