Club Sadowsky!!!

I'm going to be a pariah here and suggest you think about something in a 35" scale if you're detuning.

Also, if you're used to the string-spacing of your Sadowsky, then even just the spacing on an MM might throw you off. Or not, but I ended up selling off my basses with tighter string spacing due to comfort issues.

IMHO, YMMV etc.

I wont be de-tunning. Standard BEADG will be fine for me. The guitars will be de-tuned to drop C. I didn't want to de-tune my 4 stringers... thats what I meant.

I hear you on the MM Spacing. I've played a few and don't like the spacing at all... I guess I could get used to it, but you make a good point.

I think its really down to a Modern or MV5.

^ Not a fan of drop tunning as I don't care for super lose strings. Especially if going to drop C. I'll need a 5 banger for sure.

Anyone else with comments about the low end punch of an MV5 vs. Modern 5 ?

The pickups placement of the Modern 5 make it seem like it would be more in the realm of punchy/aggressive tone... but input would be great.

I have no first-hand experience with either the MV5 or Modern5, unfortunately, but BassCentre had a couple of clips on youtube of both basses. It might be worth searching for them and checking them out.

You can also look up Bass Club Chicago's videos on YouTube. They should have examples of most everything Sadowsky offers.

Ah, okay. Fair enough.

I tried a 24/5 when I was in the Jay Street shop and fell pretty hard for it. It had a sizzle and snap that was fabulous... And completely unsuited to both my main band and the other projects I've been involved with, which is why I went for the standard with the 60s spacing. I think the modern is a good fit with a lot of er... Noisier bands. But I almost think you could flip a coin and come up with a winner on this one.

Edit: Bass Club Chicago's YouTube channel has a review of a modern. I'd link but I found the bid on my work computer and I'm TalkBassing on my iPhone. You might like the sound. They also have an MV...

my heart slowly gravitates towards the MV5

i know for sure I'll love it. not so sure with the Modern

I installed the VTC retro-fit yesterday and it really sounds nice. It seems to me that the preamp can be rather subtle in the boosting (which is good IMO). Basically you get one awesome sound with the ability to 'take it to 11' if need be.

Does that seem like an accurate description? I'd hate to think that I wired it wrong and really like that tone.

See I wish I knew the Modern more... With the SR5 I know what I'll get (and its pretty good for that tone). I know what I'll get with the MV5 as well.

The Modern is elusive to me which makes it alluring.

I kinda think it will be in between a SR tone & MV5 - sorta in the middle... but not sure, just going based on pickup placement.

Something like that. The Modern sounds sort of like a ken smith if that means anything to you. Very focussed and tight, a little nasal, quick notes come out with a "bap" kind of sound. They are cool basses.

Yeah, this is a MUCH better description than somewhere between an SR and MV. The SR is just SO very different in SO many ways from an MV, but I think lots of people are familiar with the Smith sound.

It's also somewhat similar to a Peavey Cirrus (which has also been compared to a Smith, BTW). Dual buckers closer to the bridge... lots of cutting midrange bite, thump, and aggression, and a modern sizzly high end. What you don't get is the big round low end profile of a more J type bass. You need to have a pickup a bit closer to the neck for that... dialing in bass EQ won't get you there.

What I liked about mine was I literally needed less power from my amp to cut a mix. What I eventually flipped it for, was I missed having a more J like low end profile.

I did this with a metal band 2 years ago and used my NYC Standard 5.
It worked perfectly and what Vic talked about, it had that nice low end that I was used to hearing with my Standard 4.
I would suggest the singles in the MV5 as well. I liked the singles in my Standard 5 but loved the HC in my Standard 4.

Hey guys :)

I have an RV5 PJ and its gorgeous! One question though....is it possible to re route the pickup cavity (and make a new pick guard) so i can install a set of single coil jazz pickups? Or will it be too difficult because of the P route?!

:)

I don't see any problems with that mod. I've had two Sadowskys that were routed for both neck pickups.

So, uh... Here's something embarrassing...

I've been trying to record something for my guitarist, and the sad has been overloading the input in a massive, peaky way. I though I had everything flat, right?

Then I went over to bass12's place yesterday and got reminded that the bass and treble are boost only. Whoops... Funny how different you have to approach a pre without a centre detent on the treble and bass. I guess I'm still in a Lakland headspace...

It happens, its easy to do since every other preamp is boost/cut. I usually record my PJ passive... I'm to the point I mostly play it passive thru the outboard preamp thru PA live.

Perfect - I understand how it sounds now. Kinda what I was thinking it would sound like too. Thanks Vic.

Roger emailed me earlier this week to discuss the buckeye top I picked out. He suggested that I rotate the top to bring out the blues. I totally agreed with him. He said they are starting on my bass. Only a matter of time now....
Following Roger's advice is ALWAYS a good idea IMHO. :)
