I just remembered I promised some pics of my latest Sadowsky...

She is my 25th Sadowsky and I love them all! This is obviously a Metro Hybrid P. I have to say I have owned 2 NYC Ultra Vintage P's and had a third during the 7 day trial and this Metro just has IT. I read a lttle higher up the thread the discussion about the Metro vs NYC build quality. I have owned more Sadowskys than anybody else with the possible exception of Bikeplate (who helped me get hooked on them) and Jason Newstead. I have played a lot more and I have returned almost as many on the 7 day return as I have kept ( it is a running joke in the shop whether I will keep one or return it, I have no doubt) I have NEVER had a problem returning one for ANY reason. I have probably spent enough on shipping to buy another one though! LOL! My experience is the same as it would be with ANY bass builder. Some basses grab me and some don't. NO 2 pieces of wood will sound exactly the same, THAT is a FACT I have come to learn from owning and playing hundreds (Thousands??) of instruments over the last 36 years. I have the greatest respect for Roger because I know that he begins the process with the wood itself. If you think just any piece of wood will sound like a Sadowsky you are mistaken. Of course there are a lot of things that go into the equation, you can't get past the fundamental piece of the equation which is the choice of body blank. I wish Roger would be kind enough to take the time to record a video of the process he undertakes when he chooses the blanks and matches the necks to the blanks. I have heard about it but I know many here have not. If you knew what went into the process you would be a believer....

Anyway, off the stump! Here she is, my 25th Sadowsky and EVERY BIT as good as ANY Bass I have ever had! A METRO Hybrid P bass...This one is better than the '73 I lost in a fire a few years ago!

This is one of the finest P basses I have ever laid my hands on. As good as any of the NYC's I have played and BETTER in many ways than any Vintage Fender I have ever played. I currently have a LOT of basses, Sadowsky, Alleva Coppolo, Lakland, Warwick, Fender, Spector, etc... but this P is the one I have been taking with me lately! Thanks Roger for doing what you do! My regards to the guys in the Tokyo shop for making me the best P bass I could find to replace my '73! My Sadowsky Club number is 26 so maybe I should get you to make me that Caramel Burst 4 and make that one number 26?

Well, not quite a disagreement as what I wrote was that I "doubt" and "wonder", which implies that I'm not really sure...
Anyway, I see this topic is chewed to the bone all over TB. Just forget it... the important bottom line is that my Metro cut through the mix like a sharp knife through butter in the gig two nights ago.

I will preface this by saying that I first played a Sad about a year ago and was absolutely blown away by the neck and the sound. I have been plotting to get one ever since.

I played my new Metro for about 30 minutes and right away notice a bunch of problems.

1. There is a rattle in the headstock somewhere. I can't make it go away by holding any of the tuners.

2. The intonation is out - the octaves aren't in tune

3. the D string sounds dead

4. Most troublesome, though is the general sound of the instrument. I have read that Roger feels the acoustic sound of an instrument is extremely important to the eventual tone. The Metros I played in the shop were just beautiful, with a singing tone in which you could hear all the detail including an ominous extremely low-end frequency that spoke of serious response through good gear.

This one just does not have anything like that tone coming off of it. I compared it to my main Jazz and the difference was clear.

At this point I am feeling bad, so I called my guitar tech. My guy is one of the best guys in Toronto and probably in Canada. Any working guitarist or bassist here would know him or know of him. When I told him I was getting a Sad he was very happy and told me that he has worked on several and loves them. He agreed to see me right away.

I went over and he played the bass. He didn't say much for a long time. Then he told me that

1. The rattle is a loose screw somewhere in the tuner assemblies. He confirmed that it's not the truss rod.

2. He asked me what kind of strings were on it and I said Sadowskys. He said that he didn't think much of them.

3. He said that the nut needed to be shaved. He said that it was about 1/5 as bad as the new Fenders that he sees, but it still needed to be done

4. Regarding the tone, he looked uncomfortable and then finally said something like 'I see lots of really expensive guitars that don't sound as good as $500 ones'.

I'm actually surprised at how bummed out I am. I know that guitars are like women - no two are the same and they are pieces of wood. I can't expect every one to be perfect. I have never purchased anyinstrument without playing it. What can I say.

I just had to vent and maybe get some advice. I have 7 days to ship it back. My tech asked me to change the strings before he would look at it further. I guess I could do that and take it back to him. If he fixes the rattling headstock, does that void my return capability?

I realize that complaining about a Sad in the shrine of Sad is not the best way to get an objective opinion. If this just turns into a flame-fest I'll start a thread. Once again... I decided to buy a Sad because I was blown away by every one I played until this one.

hey everyone!!

im pretty new to talkbass but i couldn't help but reply to this!

i have a metro UV70 and a NYC vintage 4

they are both excellent basses with very very similar fit and finish!

when my NYC arrived (i live in the UK) i noticed that it had a few slight issues! i noticed a rattling sound at the headstock like tradernick mentioned and it needed a quick set up (i do this with all basses anyway to get it exactly how i like it)

i could not figure it out at first but the rattling at the headstock turned out to be the large screw that holds the gearing for one of the tuners/machine heads had come a quarter turn loose! not a major problem at all! :)

this bass had just been half way round the world for christ's sake!! im sure i'd have a screw loose if it was me that was thrown around on a plane, in a van etc etc

i understand that this bass would have been perfect had i picked it up at the shop in New York! but i didnt! i asked them to ship it to me in the UK and as far as im concerned i believe that slight, tiny issues like the ones i mentioned are out of the sadowskys control! i mean what are they gonna do?? get the fed ex guys to set it up before you receive it??


.......so i tightened the screw, spent half an hour tweaking the set up slightly and everything is just how i want it! it sounds and feels great!



oh and on a side note i think wood makes a big difference!! my UV70 is ash/maple! my NYC is alder/rosewood! they both have their own sound both accousticly and when amplified!!
