I've had both. I think both look great. My metro hybrid is a killer piece. I've had it a long time. Looks great, plays great. I'd like to get a pj with a jazz body, also. Really have grown to love the tone

5302 was the clear tonal winner for me despite both being incredible instruments. That's what locked me in for the ash/maple config.

Actually, returned eval... I tried really hard to like the blonde finish 'cause it was such an amazing instrument, but no soap.

I've never played a Sadowsky P-bodied P, or, PJ.

I had two previous J bodied Sad PJ's, one RV, one MV, and that aesthetic suits me more.
Neither of those basses suited me though.

I dunno if the P-body vs J body makes a big diff, it'd be intereting to compare...

My current Sadowsky PJ5 is an ash/maple MV5 with a J body, again, and this one does seem to be a keeper...

I don't think the body shape makes much of a difference, and I generally prefer the J shape. But I feel that, on an aesthetic level, putting a P pickup in a J body is like putting whitewalls on a Prius.

Lemme put it this way: if I needed a PJ right now, I'd take that one with no regrets. If I were ordering one? I've wanted a natural ash/black/maple bass for a *long* time...

Interesting aside: I find that what I like depends on the body shape, as well. No secret that I don't like bursts or pickguards; but I prefer a P bass *with* a guard than without. And there's a Lakland with a Mai-tai burst that tossed my burst-aversion under a bus.

I just thought that with your ash/maple J & the 24 w/ebony, you might enjoy a 3rd spec. I really think there's a valid sonic sweetness in rw that works well w/ PJs. You can still get some bite out of it as well but of a SLIGHTLY less aggressive nature IMO.

It's entirely possible but, as Vic said, I'm thinking that I'd prefer the more aggressive ash/maple. Ideally, I'd prefer to go NYC with a universal route and go both JJ and PJ all in one.

I look at it this way:

I have a Fender 57PRI for "pure P junk."
I have a Sadowsky PJ5, cause it's a 5, and it's it's own really good thing.

They're both ash/maple.

Bursts are another story for me. Love 2 tone burst! Up until '62 Leo's basses had a burst that looked really fine. Starting in '63 they went w/a 3 colour burst, for some time, that was just over the top for me.(way to much yellow & bright red). Roger's '59 burst NAILED it for me & would have gone w/o if that was not the case. I saw a custom burst on a flat top guitar once that had me losing sleep. It was a medium chocolate brown into amber that was Exquisite!

My P5 is also a two-tone burst, and has the gold anodized guard, but it's ash/maple with a one-piece maple neck and skunk stripe (tho vintage tint on the neck), and it does have the P shaped body. Even more traditionally, it's all passive.

My Sadowsky PJ5 is the "newer spec", 3-tone burst, two piece neck (tho still maple, just not tinted), and of course the tort guard. But it's also a J body.

Sorry, I find the offset body to be less pleasing from a visual (and physical) standpoint. Ymmv and obviously does (ie all your taste is in your mouth)

I love JJ basses and agree with you. For me P-J's work better with a P bass body. So Vic is wrong again.

Yeah, I think you're right. I've never seen a guardless P that I've liked. I think the single pup sort of looks like it's floating without the pickguard to anchor it.
