Club Sadowsky!!!

4kk9wg.jpg

Gigged 5050 for the first time. The Big Singles give a whole different flavor to the Modern profile. Actually, the bass sounds very little like my M5-24. While the bass sounds very good, I still might look for a set of Sadowsky soapbars (large profile) for that Sad Modern tone I've grown to love. By the way, the pictures of this bass do it no justice. It's truly a piece of art! It looks like my MV5 with SC's might be the odd man out.

Congrats!!! Pretty bass for sure...I was hoping for a more positive review of the Big Singles...

Please don't let this reflect negatively in any way. They sound fabulous, just different than I expected. I still need some time to see if that is the way I'm going to go. I'm so in love with the tone of my M5-24 with the Sadowsky soaps. Maybe I'll keep both and have both flavors. One thing I must point out about the Big Singles. Soloed, they are DEAD quite. No buzz, hum, nada, nothing. Also, I never grew to like the bridge pick up soloed on my metro. Maybe it is just my particular instrument, but it never did it for me. I found the exact opposite with the Big Singles. The neck pickup soloed, with some bass boost added, is a thing of beauty. It's not my personal tonal goal, but for some it could be nirvana. I don't know if it's the chambered body, but the sustain of this bass is ridiculous. A new set of Blue Steels will occupy it this weekend, so we'll see how it sits with me.

A little bit more praise for the Modern 5-24's.

I had my first gig with the rock/party band last weekend. It killed. I ran it with a slight bass boost on the onboard, treble flat, VTC wide open, and pickup blend in the center. I like the gear combination enough that getting another bass guitar moved down my wants list. The other guys (including the sound guy) in the band complimented the tone both in the mix, on stage, and in the house. The rig for that night was the Sadowsky into a Tone Hammer 500 into an SWR Goliath III Jr (2X10, 8 ohm) and SWR Son of Bertha (1X15, 8 ohm). No effects, just used the DI on the head to send a line to the board.

I'm doing a gig this Saturday with the same guys (we're functioning as blues band for this gig), except the rig will be a back lined SVT w/4X10. I hope the band leader didn't mishear those people, because I'd love to hear this bass through an SVT.

I've tried to convince myself to get a PJ-5, a V5-24, or something, but I love this sound. Maybe get a V5-24 in maple/ash, so I have a backup...yeah, a backup.

This is an interesting question. I've gone from soapbars to big singles on a Metro 5/24 and really like what I'm hearing, but it is indeed very different. Less burp off of the bridge pickup, a bit less articulate overall, but a lot more fundamental, a bit more lower-mid, and overall a slightly more "old school"and punchy presentation. BTW, this is on an alder/morado unit. Works for me...

This is VERY interesting... is there any chance they are actually Big Splits? Or, maybe it's just that you're not in a place currently where SC hum is an issue, but maybe RF/shielding is, and they're very well shielded. But if they're singles, they really should hum at some point when solo'd.

+1, must be big splits. Big Single will have some hum, even if its only slight.

Listen through a headphone amp, and if they are truly Big Singles, you'll hear hum when you favor one pickup.

Love everything about this.......Classy and i bet it sounds AWESOME!

Thanks - it does indeed sound awsome. It was a splurge purchase being it was a unique wood combo (ash/rosewood), and it was a solid, unchambered body.

Sounds like a classic Alder/Rosewood JJ, but with more alive upper midrange/punch from the ash body. Still a mellow round finger style tone, but it doesn't have the bloomy bottom of alder. A bit "tighter" sounding and more focused... but still very much a rosewood board tone. :bassist:

I think I just saw the prettiest Sadowsky ever.... That top is beautiful.

Well, I've had my MV5JJ for quite a good while now.

I've about come to the conclusion that this bass "is pretty much the cat's meow for me."
It's feels good, sounds good, and does pretty much everything I need it to.

It ain't too hard to look at either.

I'm not sure what's gonna leave, but I think it's time to start moving some stuff out.

Uh oh, does that mean we might be seeing an MV5-PJ up for sale?

Nope.
There's 4-5 basses I'll keep, and that's one of them.

Also, since the market seems to suck more than I've ever seen it suck, I won't begin fire saling off my toolbox rapidly; as it were.
