Same as everyone else... you get it, play it at home, and it's cool, but doesn't necessarily blow you away (except for maybe the playability). THEN you take it on some gigs, listen to it through some cans, and you see that familiar "now I get it" pattern forming. Yeah, it's "all that". I'm REALLY diggin' that bass... no mix it can't cope with VERY well.
Thing is, there's nothing particularly "special" about this bass other than it's an NYC J5. It literally has NO upgrade options of any kind. That means you're pretty much safe with about any NYC J5 you get, so just wait for the next deal to come along and you'll be fine. Thing is, by the time you rolled in that ms live kickback, I just couldn't pass up the price, and it's exactly the config I was looking for except for a burst finish. I'll probably still order a new one someday and maybe pass this deal on to someone else, but for now, this sucka' is stayin' right where it's at.
That spec is the best IMO for the J style Sadowsky's. I just can't quite come to terms with all the fancy tops, etc. on a J style instrument (especially given the simple, Fender style maple headstock). The fancy tops look really strange to me when you put a pick guard on them and combine then with the natural (non-laminated) maple headstock (the Standards with fancy tops look pretty cool though if they have maple boards... Joey's red one above is KILLER IMO). There's just something about the more simple Sadowsky's that say 'I'm a player not a collector'.
However, it's cool that Roger makes all these options available, and of course, none of it impacts the tone anyway! They are all killer in their own way.
Your natural ash/maple combination is IMO the best looking Sadowsky so far
Yeah, even tho it had HC's when I played it, I now regret not giving it a bit more air time when I had the chance to check it out. With SC's tho, it's got to really sing!

True, but even though I have a fancy top WITH a pickguard (parchment),
I can assure you I am no collector. All my basses see reasonably
frequent performance action, though the pay is often way way pitiful.
I was inspired by this 5er (not mine) to order a similar 4 string:
My wife won a legal dispute with a scummy employer, and asked me
to order my heart's desire from Kevin. I did. It is all I could ever want,
that is if you don't count wanting a 5-string like Swine Grantt's
(see below).
N.B., my headstock has a vintage tint, which tones down the brilliance of the maple.

I've been playing this bass a good bit of late, and it always strikes me the same way - this is how a bass should sound.

Looks can be deceiving. My fancy topped M24-5 is currently my main bass has been played a LOT. Sure, I love the top, but I'm not putting it in a glass case. I play this thing.
I do understand your sentiment however. Although I love fancy topped Sadowsky's but I don't like fancy tops on A-C's at all. Strange.
And, I totally dig the fancy tops on the Moderns. That makes total sense. They are, well, modern and 'boutique-y' looking to begin with! I still can't quite come to terms with the fancy wood on the Moderns, and then a beautiful dark board, and then that maple Fender headstock. But hey, as you say, it has nothing to do with the tone. The Moderns with fancy tops and a maple board (that kind of flows into that headstock like yours) TOTALLY float my boat!
Pure personal taste.
And, fancy tops on an A-C seem like a violation of something sacred to me.

oh, dunno if the pickup discussion is over, but i much prefer the hums w/ the preamp, while i like the singles in passive, which i rarely use.

Damn you Ken! Everytime I see that bass I like it more. Does it look as good on stage as I think it might? Light translucent colors like that tend to "pop" really nice. Sweet Sadowsky bro. Sa-weet!
