If you fret one string at the last fret you should have the same distance from the bottom of the string to the polepiece on both pickups.

That's why the bridge pickup is higher than the neck pickup.

Cool. I went ahead and tightened the screws to make the pickup heights all essentially equal. They're set at 3/32" now (pressing on string at last fret). Previously, they were 2.5/32" (neck) and under 2/32" (bridge). Even 3/32 seems low but I want to make sure the output isn't dropped too much and I now have enough "depth" to dig in when needed. Thanks for the help!

Always fun to look. That camphor burl Modern is a complete thing of beauty.

I always check out the updates, continuing to hope that there is never an NYC 5 string P up there (not many of those made). If there ever is one, in ash/maple in a color I like, I might be in a bit of trouble.

Been putting a lot of miles on this one recently. Just continues to get "better" somehow. Maybe I'm just getting more used to its nuances. I don't wanna' speak blasphemy here, but since I have the other bass with singles in it, I am thinking about trying HC's again at least in this one just for kicks.

This one took a "hit" recently...

We were doing a Halloween gig recently and I had a resin skull on top my rig, which was on a suspended stage, and cranked up kinda' loud... point is, lots of vibration. The skull "walked" off the top of the rig and somehow found its way through the guitar stand to take a chip out of the bottom back edge of the body down by the cavity cover.

The great part? I don't care much. I'm just going to touch it up a little with some wipe on poly to cover the wood up a bit and call it a day. I'm never gonna' sell this bass, so resale value is moot... plus, it's already got other dings on it... so while I do care to take care of it, accidents like this just don't hurt much.

I've never had a bass before this one that was both an amazing instrument as well as a total "player"/road/worker bass. It's awesome.

Yeah, given the kind of Modern vibe (looks like an ebony board and the 24 frets and modern body style), the HC's might make a bit of sense there, since you have the more traditional thing covered in your other one. HC's with ebony... that will definitely fit the 'modern' look of that bass. I would go for it... always could switch 'em back if you don't dig it.

Cool. I'm lucky enough to have one of those, too: the P5 in my avatar will join me in my coffin. I don't think Red or Whitey are going anywhere either, but Blackie is #1 and has the road rash to show for it.

I try to be careful... Red and Whitey aren't mint but still pretty clean. Blackie does the heavy lifting, and just as you've described, stuff happens.

It's a great time to visit the shop right now (with such healthy stock levels) if you want to discover the tonal subtleties of the different wood or pickup variations etc. I had the pleasure of playing all of them earlier this week! It was also great to meet Roger and the crew in person for the first time.

I made a Tortoise pickguard and put a chrome pickup cover that doesn't go through the body's wood. And now here it is with my '78 Fender.

4 and 5 String Jazz with different taste. Love them

Great idea....how stable is the pickup cover? How is it attached? Can it be used as a thumb anchor?

Can't decide which pick guard...tortoise looks better in general, but MOP looks better under the lights. In the meantime, my bass has multiple personalities.

Hi...

The pickup covers are very stable. It can be used to put your thumb on while playing.

The trick is simple, cut a pickguard screw to a length where it just approx. the same as the pickguard's thickness, and when making a hole for the cover on the pickguard, make it just a tad smaller than the rest of the screw holes, so the screws are really tight and can hold the cover without having it gone through the woods.

The update Sadowsky stock list just came out...I am GAS'ing...what's new right? Perhaps one of my Dowsky brethren has moved a late model J and can share with me what it brought? I know, the For Sale Feeler is what I am supposed to do...risking being chastised by TalkBass big brother I suppose. Anyway, it's Oly White Ash, flame board with ebony blocks, weighs right at 8 lbs. and except for a tiny blemish on the side of the head stock it's in perfect shape with normal non-gigging player wear. Welcome any all comments/opinions. Thanks!

Looking at the last two posts I really like the looks of the newer 5'ers with the larger diameter string posts. IMHO it is a huge visual improvement. Hoping the Metro's will one day be the same.
