Forgive my ignorance, but what do you mean by "gaudy"?
And completely agree - the sound will make it pop more than anything visually, but I still like the other of a slightly different look to what you see with most Sadowsky's / Fender JBasses

There are black pick guards that are chromed ... but black ... so a bit flashy, if catching the light just so, but not a focal point. You might like a clear pick guard too. That'll really show off the top. Or just leave the guard off, maybe put black screws in the holes. I prefer clear, no guard or just the screws, but you can't go wrong with basic black.

Black with chrome? That sounds interesting - I wonder where I could find somewhere that does these in Australia - no where has Sadowsky templates already done (that I can find) so would likely pay through the roof down under...
Yes, tort on a burst is pretty much cemented as the classic look. As to looking "gaudy;" that would certainly be a matter of personal opinion.
The anodized guard has been more of a P look. Of course you could do it; but, then you've got that chrome control plate going as well.
The challenge working with Burst is that the Burst finish itself is a little busy. If you do anything other than black, white, or tort, the guard starts drawing attention away from the finish. I would go with one of those three, depending on your pref. or clear, which could be cool too.
True. I'm very much in favor of coloring outside the box, would love to see J-with-gold (unique, possibly?), but it's hard enough to find a gold guard for a P.
The "gaudy" comment was mine. It was not made in reference to tort, it was made in reference to pearloid particularly black pearloid.
My personal rule is if I wouldn't wear a pattern or color on a shirt, I won't wear it on a bass. Bonus is that not only do I look much better onstage, it saves me a LOT of GAS and cash.
+1. My one exception is the black pearloid on a black body/maple neck combo. I think that looks ok.

Agreed 100%. I can't grasp why a builder such as Sadowsky, that sells direct to customers and offers customer service as one of its defining and differentiating hallmarks, affixes pick guards to any of its new instruments, much less the ones with fancy or trans tops.
Factor the prices, then factor the premiums for fancy tops, and it seems an easy & reasonable thing, though I'd argue it's a no-brainer, to give the original buyer the choice to have one or not.
It'd be an easy thing to take pics for the "In Stock" page with the pick guard just taped on, maybe even a few different pick guard color options and most importantly *none*. Sure you can custom order and wait months, however the more and varied pics then the more postings online result and the more free advertising and GAS-attack impulse buys will result. Win/win/win.

What's so hard to grasp? Some customers prefer pickguards even on figured-top basses. Anyone who wants a Sadowsky with figured top and no guard/clear guard can just order one, the shop will be happy to accommodate.
