You know, I think a matching headstock would have made the whole thing too dark, with that dark board and color. The natural headstock 'Fenders' it up a bit, and I think it looks perfect! Nice rig too!

man Im tempted to converting my NYC PJ5 into a JJ.. Just for the fun of it...
My bass has the Universal route under the PG so all i would need to do is order the PUps and a new PG from Roger... mmmmm

My Alleva has been getting all my J5 work and it would be nice to have another J5 flavor....:eyebrow:
The PJ5 is so worn in and feels like home it ridiculous....

Hey Kirk. You are describing where I'm at now. I have a couple of NYC Sadowsky J's with single coils (and RV5 and an MV5) and my Alleva LM5.

While I dig the Sadowsky PJ, that configuration requires (I think) that you use HC pickups. While the HC's sound great, and the PJ configuration does fatten up the tone, I still hear that kind of modern, HC tone with those intruments. The JJ singles actually provide similar meat and mid fullness of the PJ (although you obviously can't solo the neck pickup to get that true P tone), but grind and growl much more.

The Alleva, as you know, is about as close to a 40 year old Fender as you can get, but the Sadowsky J with singles is a wonderful, aggressive, grindy, punchy update of that tone. There's still a LOT of J tone in it, but it's active and in your face.

I really like both flavors, and have literally sold all my other basses at this point.

I think you should check out the singles, especially if you have the route in there already (and I believe you aLso have the Alleva P, which is about the best P out there IMO).

Not necessarily. Just depends on your tolerance for hum and the places you play.

The underlying fact behind this is that the P pickup is already humbucking, so it can't be used to humbuck with the bridge pickup in blended mode like a straightup JJ. So as long as you're using the bridge pickup, you'll get all it's (potential) hum.

But from a strictly functional standpoint, you can use an SC or an HC in the bridge position, and it works fine.

+1.. that was kind of my point. You really wouldn't want to put a SC J pickup in that model... but I guess you could:smug:

I (especially) agree. I have very low tolerance for SC hum, which is why the Sadowsky's particularly quiet nature (still relatively speaking tho of course) is critical for me.

I know you know about this. It was more just a "BTW" to hopefully avoid someone taking your comment to suggest there's a technical reason one couldn't be used at all. No biggie. :)

IIRC, Rodger would need your bass in order to cut a new PG. Perhaps he can do this without your bass by using your current PG.

What? Correct me if I'm wrong, but Roger's done this config before, so he can probably just send him one cut from a pre-existing template if he doesn't already have one in stock.

When I ordered my NYC ReversePJ, Kevin said it was best to get the extra pick guard (NormalPJ) while they still had my bass because they needed it in order to custom cut one. Perhaps they can now do it without the bass.

Ahhh, but maybe it was because it was a reverse P? How long ago did you get it? Maybe tombowlus can chime in because he has a "convertible" PJ, but it's currently PJ, not JJ.

Ok, there goes that theory. I was thinking if you got yours a while ago it might be something they didn't have then that they do now, but I guess now it's back to either they're all "custom" or only the reverse P is. Maybe he'll just call Sadowsky and get the real answer. :D

The pickguards are fitted to each instrument so tight that they need to be cut from the original pickguard (unless you're willing to make some adjustments yourself and then you'll probably end up cutting too much plastic :crying:)

Wow, while this doesn't really shock me noting how particular Roger is about precision, it does actually come as a little bit of a surprise. I'd think he'd have things down to the point he could have them cut from a template and they'd fit very nicely without having to specifically fit each instrument.
