With a PJ, I always recommend a huncancelling J.

I’m your PJ Huckleberry. Roger’s HC J pup really has some bark and some snot to it. I consider it my ‘upper mid boost’ knob.

I may or may not imagine myself in white pants to my waist and a fashionable doo-rag on my dome.

Single coil J in a PJ is a non starter for me just because of the hum. The correct quesion is HC J or a soapbar. The Nordstrand based HC J in the current PJ set is killer.

MTD makes fantastic instruments, but very different from Sadowsky's. I personally prefer the latter. Sorry it didn't work out for you and good luck with the new bass.
