Club Sadowsky!!!

A very wise man! . Have a view of "Standing In The Shadows Of Motown" DVD (especially the included *jam sessions*), if you would like to check out a master of P-Bass tone". Bob Babbitt - R.I.P.- , is a flats player who used a sponge mute under the strings, typical, in many cases, to the times, for getting the bass to *sit* in those Motown records.
There's a story told about James Jamerson, the revered Motown bassist, who came into a recording session so drunk one time that they had to lay him down on the floor so he could do his work. How's that for a respect for a first call bassist. These guys loved their old dirty flats in the mix. Just OLD is good enough for me. I prefer cleaning with rubbing alcohol.

The track he was laying down on supposedly is "What's Going On".

The Dragonfly - my NYC Satin Series 4-21 in satin sage green metallic! Incredibly good. :)

Hi Ronen. Hope you are doing well. Thanks for the email awhile back. Please do us a favour & post the name of those *next level* flats that you once mentioned, if you can remember. I've searched my records without success. Someone else recommended them to me awhile back, & since I am a geriatric, I forgot. ;) They came stock on an electric upright *stick* bass I recall.
Be well

Doing well although no Sadowsky bass at the present time. This may change however.
I was probably referring to the NS710 by D'Addario that come stock on NS Omni bass. Those are very low tension and sound & feel great on fretless. I doubt they'll perform well with fretted basses. Very pricey too.

Thanks Ronen. Yeah, those are the ones. (about $165 CDN). A fist full to pay for a curiosity audition. For a flats guy it's very tempting. I thought your Sadowsky fretless was an exceptional instrument.

Maybe Roger could help with that if you send a traced paper template of the hole location of the original PG.
You could send an email to start.
Mine came from a supplier in Chicago. It's a part from an older model F. *hotrod* P bass (w/p/j's) I had to do the truss access myself. Some (Sadowsky excluded) aluminum gold guards have some *tooth* to them. That is the surface is abrasive a bit & your thumb nail gets filed & shows on the surface where it rests on the PG. Mine was like that so I took a block wrapped with 400 grit & lightly sanded (* ONE direction -back & forth to avoid scratch marks), until it felt good. (being careful not to go too deep & remove the anodizing. Worked like a charm. Love the '57 flavour of the gold on a colour like S.B.

Please forgive a non Sadowsky here but here's what it looks like. (full length top photo shows the slight yellowish patina on Sonic Blue fairly accurately - 15yrs old)

Yes it's Sonic Blue. Gold pickguard sounds interesting...

Gold does sound interesting! I had a cream guard on a Sonic Blue Warmoth bass I had built. Such a killer combo. A little more pop than white, but more subdued than a gold one. Looked fantastic. I have pics but this isn't the Warmoth thread, lol...

I did this mock-up a long time ago. What do you guys think of gold on blonde? (the neck and fingerboard are much darker now, the bass was almost new then)

I think the black is probably the one most commonly / historically fitted so accepted as a great choice. I personally feel that having 2 PG's is a way to refresh. Black for me Fran.
Fender put gold guards on the white-blond / maple 1957 P-bass. That was my reference for choosing. Willie Weeks played one with Eric Clapton @ the Crossroads 2010 I believe. Now THERE'S a *P* guy !!! Talk about groove! I have never heard him play a note that wasn't in the pocket.
