Club Sadowsky!!!

Back in: I've been looking for an HPJ for a while and an ex-demo came up in Germany a few weeks ago - everything I hoped it would be, great to have a Sadowsky again (my third but I think this one isn't going anywhere...). Put some TI Flats on it (nice contrast to the Labella's on my LB100) :hyper:

:thumbsup: We live in a typical Edinburgh tenement (1st floor which = your 2nd if I'm not mistaken); it means storing them outside isn't viable so I built this log store to hold 2 month's worth. Schlepping the up from the street and stacking them is a pain but it's worth it when I light the fire :)

Anyone here have a ramp or thumb rest between the pups on their Modern? Kinda thinking about having something like that made...

I did this several times back in the day. You can probably still find my posts in the TB archives. The short story is that the SA200 could do a pretty good job of copping the DB359 tone/feel, but not so much the other way around. Kept my SA200, sold the DB359. Then bought another DB359, and ended up selling it, as well. The DB359 is a GREAT amp, but the SA200 is on another level, IME/IMHO.

I am totally stoked! I ordered some Sadowsky single coil pickups for my RV5 and I can’t wait to put them in! Love my Sadowsky, but I felt that it wasn’t as “open” sounding as I wanted with the humcanceling pickups. I’ll post my thoughts once I have installed them... not sure if these are the Nordstrand or Duncan versions...

That pic looks Nordstrand. But, a better way to tell is by the amount of copper shielding on the bottom. The Nordstrand’s are shielded to withstand a nuclear EMF discharge.

Cool. I'll enjoy reading another data point on this topic. I love the HC to the point I've never seriously considering swapping. Never even thought of adding a series switch, though now that I mention it that might rule. Maybe I can use the pull-passive switch for that. Hmmmm....

I have changed Duncan singles in my Standard 5 to HC taken out from the Metro to go from more middy sound (SC) to more scooped sound with elevated highs and lows (HC). In case of Sadowsky, the SC/HC difference is quite counterintuitive. I don't know about Nordstrands vs Duncan SC, might be different case. Your looks like Nordstrands, they have rounded cover edges, Duncans have sharper edges and matt (finely grained) top surface and plastic wire sleeves (not waxed cloth).
Please post your impressions after the replacement.

NBD! New 4-21 ebony fb with my 5-24. Not the best pic (and definitely not a scratch—just a weird light reflection at the curvature of the 4-21 upper bout) Better pics in the future...

Absolutely love the 4-21’s immediate “piano” attack, with ash body/maple neck bite...found a great tone in a few seconds: vtc dialed down about 85% and the bass +5%/treble +40%. The passive bass tone is gorgeous, and something I didn’t already have covered, too. (Sadowsky SS Black 45’s) Super thanks again, Roger and shop team!

Ok, it is confirmed that these are the Nordstrand wound Sadowsky singles. I asked him about his single coils and he said (correct me if I’m wrong) that they originally had the Duncan singles and then switched to Nordstrand. He had customers say that they were too dark sounding and went back with the Duncans. They have now went back with the Nordstrand singles but are now wound to sound like the Duncans. The reason for going back to Nordstrand is because Duncan can’t replicate the casing to match the other pickup covers in his line of pickups.

My review of my new single coil pickups... Wow! Huge difference! Very open, clear and balanced. They are not compressed like the HC pickups. The HCs had plenty of crispy highs and big bottom, but it just seemed like something was missing for my sound. With these singles, the mids are more present and they are very punchy. They are the quietest single coils I’ve ever heard. Even with the pan rolled to either neck or bridge pickup, hum is barely noticeable.

The HC pickups were very “scooped” sounding and even more so when boosting the pre. Now, it just seems like everything is there and is much more versatile. It still sits in the mix and sounds like a Sadowsky should. Played it tonight at church and other musicians commented on how much better it sounded. These pickups have made my Sadowsky experience even better! Thankful to Roger for creating such an incredible instrument.
