Club Sadowsky!!!

These Sadowsky reminiscences remind me of my newbie status and just how recent is my discovery of these awesome engines of musical thrust.

I am not worthy, yet the excellence of these instruments does help to make the most of my nascent skills. (Decided at 15 to become a bass player, waited 40 years, finally did.)

A wise TBer told me a few years ago in a PM that, over time, I would gravitate toward better instruments and amps. Roger that! (See what I did there? :smug:)

If I can distract the War Department, I will get a family photo together. Two Metros and two TYOs. Hmmm. Might be time to visit the Big Apple.

Yep, That was one I had to sell or literally lose my house. It would still be with me today otherwise. I bought that one on Ebay, buy it now. I've bought 3 used here, I bought one from Atlanta Bass Gallery, and my Metro from the shop in NYC. Kjung told me he ordered that Standard 5 and changed his mind bought his Orange MV5 instead (I think Vic Serbe has that one). It showed up on eBay and the price was right. I think I paid $3200 shipped.

Anyone in the Dallas area? I'd love to experiment with multiple Sadowsky models...I sold my 2001 Sadowsky '59 Burst Sadowsky last year and just got my first NYC Modern 5 String on Friday. I want a 4 string but really would love to experiment a little.

First awesome kudos to Roger and Lisa for putting out a signature instrument. Definitely appears to be an utterly spectacular bass.

Second, an extremely well written article from an ex-BP writer. I was previously unaware of this online publication, which appears to be taking up where BP left off. No comment on current version of BP.

Anyhow, WOW!

Great bass! And great writing from Herrera. This one went to Japan but we have a few bodies in production. It’s a super resonant instrument.

It was at Corner Music. Yup, brand spankin new.

When I was playing with the controls it was the first thing that stood out to me. All of my previous Sadowsky's that I've owned have had the standard "reverse" panning. This one had a more "standard" pan like other instruments have.

Who knows, maybe someone at the store switched the wires? Either way it sounded fantastic.

that is super interesting. yah, either that or they ordered it that way.

I’m in Austin and would definitely love to meet up with another Sadowsky player! I’ve got an older 5-string Jazz (not sure on the pickups, it’s one of Tully’s older Sadowsky basses) and my new 5-strong Super P & Super J.

Funny you posted this, I’ve been gassing for a Modern 5-string and would love to try one out!

New to the club with a Limited Edition (Ash/morado) Metro 5, thats been upgraded to the WL single coils. The bass plays and sounds GREAT, I really love it. The only thing I am wrestling with is trying to tame the "grind" in the upper mids/lower treble. I'm used to an airy-er top end, and have been curious if there is a string set users recommend to tame the upper mid grind and smooth out that region a bit. Considering some elixers. I dont want to get away from rounds, wondering if there is anything in that category that might help smooth and warm up the grind? thx

When you say "airy" do you mean a slightly more modern tone?

My experience is that the VTC control makes the bass sound more aggressive and vintage the higher it's cranked. I've found that if I roll that back completely or only give it a slight bump, then crank my treble control, I get a more "modern" airy sound and slightly less of the vintage grind.

And my strings are usually just standard D'Addario roundwounds.

By airy I guess I mean a higher treble frequency. I do have a little more luck with rolling back the VTC and boosting a little treble, and with nickels. With hi beams it’s just a bit clanky. By contrast my DJ5 with nord hum canceling j’s and an east j tone is sweeter and snappier up high, but the sadowsky crushes in the mid and low end
