Can a single coil J be used in a PJ set up or does it have to be the HC model and why?

HC. While you can use a single, it won't 'hum cancel' with the PBass pickup like it will with another single coil J when both pickups are full on (balance at center).
This is why I always suggest that those who are getting a PJ primarily to fatten the tone of the Sadowsky J (versus wanting a true P sound with the neck pickup solo'd) consider a standard JJ model with the singles. It will get you there also!
+1 to Ken's comments. The Singles I threw in my RV5 completely transformed that bass. As far as the PJ goes, after being slightly disappointed at the muted sound of a friends Sadowsky PJ5's bridge pickup equipped with the standard HC PUPS, I can report that my PJ5 with Nordstrand PUPS just KILLS. All the punch and, to me anyways, Single-Coil flavor that I could ever want. That and the P pickup sounds more balanced and less woofy.
That makes sense also. Something about that somewhat modern voicing of the Sadowsky HC combined with a P pickup never really made a ton of sense to me personally... kind of too much apples to oranges. It was kind of 'old school averaged in with 'new school' equaling... well, I'm not quite sure!
I assume the Nordstrand J is some sort of split coil or something. That makes more sense, since the Nordy J pickups have a little bit more organic, old school mids going on to my ear.
