It can be, though there will naturally be some hum.
On my NYC PJ, the J pickup is a standard Sad HC. But on my Reverend Rumblefish PJ, the J is a true single coil. When it's in PJ mode and cranked all the way up, there is some hum, though it's usually not too bad while gigging (some places are worse than others). Back it off just a tiny bit and it's mostly gone, as part of the hum is cancelled by the part of the P pickup that's running in the opposite direction. There's a lot less hum from that single coil when the bass is in PJ mode than running a typical single coil by itself. Despite the hum though, the single coil J has a superior tone to the HC J pickup IMO.
It's something of a tradeoff, and I'm not so enamored of singles that I'm wanting to put one in my NYC PJ -- it sounds pretty great as is and it's nice to not have to worry about hum with it. However, the single does give the Rumblefish PJ a nice edge.
I also have a Metro UV70 5-string with the Sadowsky singles if I'm in a single coil mood.

Well, since you posted this personal debate in a Sadowsky thread, primarily trafficked by Sadowsky fans, one could probably assume you want the Sadowsky fans in this Sadowsky thread to nudge you in the most predictable direction... then again, maybe I'm way off base...
