You heard right...I have said this many times but it is in a league of its own. If you have the chance to do a direct comparison with any other wood combination you would see what I mean. There is more to it than just color of the wood...lol. The wood itself is very organic and feels like nothing else out there. It has a very distinct tone when plucked to slapped compared to other woods. I am sure others will say they do not hear or notice a difference but I assure you it is there.

I prefer Alder and Brazillian and then Alder and Madagascar. I like Maple and Ash or Maple and Morado/Pau Ferro. The Morado is the "Maple of the dark woods" in my opinion. It is nearly as hard as Maple and nearly as bright. The center tonal frequency is a touch lower on the Morado but it has very snappy sound for a dark wood. The Brazilian has a much more sonically complex tone and IMO has a richer sound to it. It can be debated forever but there is a difference in each tone wood. The question is can you hear it and do you like it or prefer something else? There is no right or wrong here. Everybody has an opinion and has the right to that opinion but I for one am of the opinion that there are clearly distinguishable differences in each wood and I do hear them. If Roger Sadowsky says there is a difference that in itself is certainly worth conceding whether I could actually hear any difference or not...

By the way I got a chance to visit the shop briefly yesterday and met the guys around the shop. They have some killer basses in stick right now and even though I was in a bit of a hurry to get out of town I had a chance to play a few. I played the Seafoam 5 NYC and it is really great. The Metro PJ 5 sounds just monstrous and the Will Lee was REALLY cool. THe thing I noticed about the Will Lee was how much it "felt" like a really old Fender back in the days when the neck was not always exact. My family has owned a MI store since the 20s and we were a Fender dealer since the late 50s. I can remember those old guitars and basses we carried as a kid and I have played them throughout my adult life as well. The WL really captures that but gives it a unique modern twist. My guess is that Will must have made some kind of deal with the devil to get Roger to make a 3 band preamp...LOL! I expected to love the bass and hate the preamp but I actually really dug it. I only had it in my hands for a few minutes but it was really, really cool. The difference in the width would seem subtle but it us not (at least IMO).

I just want to add that Roger is a class guy all the way and Kevin and the rest of the staff were very friendly and helpful. The shop reminds me a bit of what Santas workshop must be like. There seems to be stuff everywhere...LOL I was in to drop off an MV5 that I got last week to have Rob L give the neck a sand and give it one of his magic setups. I think I do a pretty good setup job but you have to see and play one of his to believe it. I wish I cold have had the whole day to play some more things and hang a bit but I had to get out of Brooklyn before the rush hour...Unfortunately I got held up a bit due to an accident with a school bus but I got in about 11:30 last night. I made the trip in a day again leaving at about 2 AM Monday night and getting back at about 11:30 last night as mentioned. I hit a couple of wrecks and ran into a blizzard for about 80 miles between DC and New York but I still managed. I HIGHLY recommend anyone who is considering buying a bass to call the shop and arrange a tour and some sound room time. You will be in good hands and you will be surrounded by the finest instruments in the world! Thanks guys!
