In my personal opinion the best combination for ebony is maple neck and mahogany body, ebony is excellent but it does not match with all woods. Be careful when combining. my favorite combination is ash body, jazz pickups, roasted maple neck and birds eye maple fingerboard. Although I prefer jazz pickups. I had a great opportunity to try before buying between 2 Sadowsky Humbuckers, one with my favorite woods: ash body, maple neck, maple finger, another with a combination of woods that are not my favorite , mahogany body- flame roasted maple neck and Ebony. To my surprise and personal opinion I loved the tone of ebony combined with mahogany and roasted Flame maple. Boooom Giant low, Giant mids and brilliant as the Sun ,and Incredible Tone in combination for Humbucker. Soon I post the NYC photo. I also hope soon that all this happens with convid19, to Roger sending me my new NYC. Ash body, roasted, maple neck, birds eye maple fingerboard and of course single coil pickups. We will see soon what happens when you compare them.
speaking of mtd tho, my current one and the one before it have ash necks and i do like those a lot... at least on an mtd. not sure about others. i had a drozd that was combo maple/ash that seemed to work, but i'd probably never spec that myself on a custom.
