So I just put Dunlop Super Bright Nickels on my JJ 5 and am not happy with the B string at all. Anybody have this experience with Sadowsky 5 strings and Dunlop strings?
It wouldn't be the bass.
Generally speaking: thicker strings can be iffy. Back in my 4-string days it could be the E, and when switching to 5 it quickly became apparent that low B issues happen even more frequently.I wouldn't judge a brand based on a sample size of one. Any brand can deliver a dud, which is why many will replace them. Of course some brands are more consistent than others, and on that note, I've seen reports of inconsistency with Dunlops. Also, I've used them myself, off and on. I'm not the best at keeping track of these issues but there have been at least two occasions when I was not thrilled with the Dunlop B. Wouldn't say either were floppy, but they weren't ideal. OTOH, I've installed Dunlop sets that were fine, including the B.
Yes, I have had a two or three 5str sets that the B was dead right out of the package. E, A, D, and G were fine. I really like the Dunlops alot when I get a good set. I've also read on this forum about players that have had consistantly good luck with them. I even have a set on my ME, but they're old and done.
On the MV5-WL I had a few years ago I didn't like the Dunlop Super Bright nickel set. Mostly the Low B. It sounded anemic. I tried a couple of sets before I moved on. Put a set of Fat Beams on it, and instantly that bass came to life. That is not to say that the Dunlops won't sound good, but I think its good to experiment with different strings to find what a particular bass sounds best with.
My current MV5 sounds pretty killer with a set of old Sadowsky Blue nickels. I freakin' love this bass!
