I really really wanted a single cut, but with them being more expensive, and having never played one, I went with a modern 5er. I was worried I may not like the heel joint. And I couldn’t find one locally to try it out before I started my order.

Thank you Ken! I appreciate it. I felt the same way at first but then I was able to try one and I really loved how it felt! To me and in my opinion the SC is very comfortable to play. I own some Moderns as well, all 5ers.
A big thanks to Roger for recently installing a coil cut switch in my Satin series bass for me. I loved the sound of the bass before, but now I like it even better in single coil mode. It sounds fuller and more open when switched to single coils.
It really does make a big difference.
My FBass BN5 is switchable between single/humbucking, and the default "down" position for the knob is single coil.
I had a Sadowsky Modern 5 a while back and installed Nordstrand Fat Stacks in it because you can wire them to turn off the dummy coil. Used a push/pull switch on the volume knob and it worked great.
I've hardly ever had noise issues with single coils, and they sound great, but it's nice to know that if you were doing a session you could switch it to humbucking.
I also had the shop install this switch. My perception was different. There was a definite gain boost when switching off the hum cancel portion of the pickups. At first this sounded like more cut to me. Once I adjusted for the gain boost and compared at the same sound pressure level, I found almost no difference in tone. That is a testimonial to the HC pickups that they are not coloring the tone when wired in hum cancelling mode. Of course, YMMV.
The newest USA 5 string versions are vertical stacks - one coil on top of the other. Older versions were one coil covering 3 strings and one coil covering the other 2. These can still hum in certain environments, so the change to a vertical stack was made. This arrangement offers a full humbucking mode - the 3/2 version only offers a 75% humbucking effect. Of course I'm not a company spokesman but this is how I understand it.
I think Sadowsky is the only company offering this sort of setup. They are deeper pickups top to bottom and require some deepening of the existing routs in Metro basses. I just had these pickups installed in my Metro. My tech found great success deepening the routs using a router bit originally intended for the Israeli military. This forum is the only place in the world where I would even bother to mention that.

I've yet to have an issue with noise from the singles in my WL-5. Granted, I typically run it straight down the middle, but when I've panned either way here and there, no noise. The singles just sound too good for me to wander off into humbucker land.

Both my NYC's have singles, and always will.
I have a really nice Metro Express with the new HC's in it (had the shop put them in due to the route mod requirement), and a Japanese Metroline PJ5 with the previous HC J in it. Both sound great, but not as great as the NYCs.
My new NYC will have both the supers in it, so a totally different beast there.
Me too. I've been a double humbucker user for years. I'm not gonna sell my present two examples, and sometimes covet having a 5-24 once again, but my metro WL5 is (so far - have not been around neon lights) noise-free in all settings, and after years of resistance, I'm head over heels with the single coils.
I'd love to try the stacked HC pickups, but I'm about 99.9999% certain they wouldn't dethrone the SCs for me. I've tried the Aguilar HC jazz pickups in two other basses and did like them as a different flavor, though they didn't sound like SCs to me.

I’ve always had the HCs or Soapbars except for one Will Lee I had for a while. When I ordered this NYC Satin back on 12/30/19 I decided to go with singles. I love it!
I normally play my basses slightly blended towards the neck pickup and this one is Fat and Quiet. I have to practically place my head against the speaker grill to hear any hum. Once again, Roger is The Man.
Personally, I think the block inlays are a secret anti-hum material

... that feeling when you receive your new Sado and make all electronic check, cleaning, setup, neck maintenance...
