Sunbeams/Pure Blues for the flexy round-core folks (that's me); hi-beams and low riders for the hex-core high-tension crowd. These all are great strings, and as much as I respect the theory of Sadowsky and other strings that feature a taper-core B string (and have used them at times), the DR Nickelrounds consistently please me like no others. Even - and especially - on Sadowsky basses.
+1, although Hi Beams are Round Core stainless, not hex core. As are Fat Beams. The Low Rider line is Hex Core.
yep. all the beams are round and the riders are hex.
Geez, I switched to DRs last year but never put that together! Thanks for making it easy for me.
... in fact, the way the strings got their names "lo-rider" is because since they're stiffer, you can generally set the action lower than with the slinkier beams.
additional data point, beams generally last longer because there are no "points" to wear down on the core. the "downside" is you have to be careful about crimping/bending BEFORE you cut the end off when stringing so you don't "sprung" the string and ruin it, but you probably already knew that. i do that on all string types anyway tho.

So on the hex core you cut to length BEFORE bending? Also, do I understand correctly that the “Riders” are somewhat brighter?
I guess it's not "official" until it's at the house, but this is "out for delivery" today. It's been a while since I was in the club. I had an RV4 a long time ago that was the best jazz I have owned. Hoping this will be as good.

Oly White (with a tort guard?) is a great look. I will say, I have become a fan of the sage green. I had a P5 that was basically this color scheme. It looked nice next to my Fiesta Red Roscoe P bass. This one should as well.
Yeah, that's what I hear. I can't afford a NYC Sadowsky, but everyone seems to think that these are pretty nice.
It's highly recommended that you crimp before cutting with round-core. Some crimp before cutting on hex core as well, but it's an option rather than a recommendation.
Tricky question because "bright" means different things to different people. There's also the factor of how a string sounds on a particular bass (factors such as woods, pickups, electronics). That said: IME Hi Beams have pingier upper treble while SS Lo Riders have grindier lo treble / hi mid (I have less experience with nickel Lo Riders). Point being, I think both are bright but in different ways.
