Gotcha. I never really understood the appeal of an Ernieball bass outside of the classic stingray setup (meaning one pickup, not the ‘classic’ series, althougth I LOVED that iteration) and the ones I’ve played have left me in ‘meh’ land.

Between the feel/ergonomics of my P-bodied NYC’s and the simplistic-yet-imminently-versatile Sadowsky pre, I feel like the bass I got is basically the dream Musicman that Ernie Ball and CO will probably never make.

I had one of the boost-only ‘Classic Series’ basses, but again, the spacing thing really bugged me. That and it had a weaker sounding D/G overall, which IME is fairly common on musicmans, but is NOT apparent on this bass I just got.

Definitely Nordstrand. Ken from Balmer definitely inspired that, and in my back and forth with the shop, they referenced having info from his build to remember the pickup placement equation. Glad to have the tonal options.

Rolling off the VTC on the single-coil mode on this bass is a real unique sound I need to get a clip of. Big and pitch-focused. Up until this build, I was doing 90% of what I do on my flats-strung PJ5, and then occasionally going to the WL5 for modern r&b/‘that’ slap sound.

The trade-off was usually PJ5= perfect fingerstyle tone and not my favorite slap tone (better with rounds but there’s nothing like an ash/maple JJ5 with rounds!); JJ5 = perfect slap tone and not my favorite fingerstyle tone (missing that low-mid push that my PJ5 has)

This MM5 might just be my ‘take ONE to the gig’ bass.

yeah, but the problem then becomes, what kind of "H" are we talking about when dealing with a builder/luthier that offers multiple Humbucking pickups to choose from. At least (IMHO) "M" or "MM" is pretty specific to Musicman/Ernie Ball. FWIW.

It's all just alphabet soup! lol

On a side a note, what is your favorite Elmon description? My fav is an older one where he wrote out the sounds of his bass in basically a cool form of tab. I remember the main line went something like "splinky splikiddity sploink sploint splank". ( sorry I'm paraphrasing here.....) in place of posting a sound bite. Totally brilliant and I could actually hear it as I read it.

The finish on my roasted maple P/J neck is fantastic. There is (or was) a satin finish there, but it’s been “hand rubbed” over the course of hours of satisfied play by me and previous owner. So it’s silky smooth for the most part now. This finish and neck differs from the oil/wax neck finishes in a Lakland or EBMM, of which I am very familiar.

That sounds about right is probably just me looking down at a maple neck that doesn’t look like maple in tint. Looks plays and feels awesome.

My on order custom is a 24 fret vintage jazz 5 with a roasted maple neck and Brazilian rosewood fingerboard. Hopefully I will share your opinion when I get it toward the end of the year.

Oh that sounds awesome just traded a 24 fret Jazz5. Is it going to be rosewood and alder pairing? How long does it take for a build these days?
