Club Sadowsky!!!

Since I already have a 21 fret alder/Brazilian rosewood, I decided to go with a solid ash body and the BR fingerboard. I've always really liked the ash/rosewood combination. Did you trade that killer 24 fret maple top, ash/maple 5? If so, I wish I'd have know it was available, I would've bought it.

I sure did haven't been playing the five string it was sort of an impulse thing I'll probably regret LOl. I've been playing a passive Lull P4 (love it) the past couple years. This P&J Sadowsky feels like a swiss army knife of possibilities. looking forward to trying in some things i've been doing lately!

Well you learn something new every day.

Reading another post on TB, they were talking about how good the Sadowsky preamp is.

He stated to turn down the VTC and play with the bass and treble boost for the pre to shine.

I have been doing it wrong for almost 1.5 years, as the tone was fat and amazing.

Is that the secret? Cause now I’m falling in love with this bass all over again.

I ordered mine with the 1.75” nut, was very happy with that with the precious Sadowsky 5er I had, so no regrets. Until of course the I play one on the 18mm ones :D

Edit: FYI, I found this post elsewhere from Roger: “In addition to the MM pickup, I also wanted to address those of you who have asked for a more narrow string spacing and neck. The new 5 st(r)ing model has 18 mm string spacing at the bridge and an appropriately narrow neck.”

Hoping for confirmation. If available on a 24 JJ, I’m your daisy.

People say the eq is like a fender tube amp, and its is, but I think the way to use it is more like a vox ac30. You dial up a brash, fat sound with the 2 band EQ, then you tame it with the passive treble cut and volume control (which loads the pickups in a sadowsky, rounding the tone)

A passive volume control adds some resistance to the overall passive circuit that includes the pickups. That reduces volume but also changes the tone slightly. There are preamps out there that buffer the pickups before the volume control to avoid that effect, but in a sadowsky its a normal passive volume and tone control before the preamp.

I spoke with Roger about this specification this afternoon. He told me that the 18mm neck will be a feature of a limited release Warwick made bass, which will feature some version of the Super J dual coil pickup - kind of a Jazz Bass meets StingRay meets Sadowsky bass. He said their Master shop MIGHT be able to make some variations, including pickup variants.

He also said that the NYC shop will NOT retool to support this specification.

I have a 5-string bass with ash body, pau ferro fingerboard, P2 size split coil pickups, and a Sadowsky 4-knob preamp. The bridge pickup is in the 60's location and the neck pickup is 2.75" further from the bridge - closer together than a 60's jazz set but a little further from the bridge than a Sadowsky Modern. I like the bass a lot but the tone is brighter than expected. Replacing the DR Pure Blue strings with GHS Pressurewounds helped a bit and the passive tone is good with the tone control rolled back about half way, but the Sadowsky preamp naturally adds some brightness and isn't very useful at this point.

My first inclination is to replace the split coil pickups with a set of P2 size Sadowsky soapbar pickups. I think these are used in the Sadowsky M5-24 bass and pair well with their preamp. These pickups have good articulation but not as bright a top end which I think would be a better fit for this instrument. I'm looking for a solid, punchy fingerstyle tone with good mids but not too hifi which can use the preamp if some extra kick or edge is needed. Would this pickup set make sense for these tone goals?
