This is an older post but I love the tone in this referenced video clip from @roogbass.
The photo below shows a pickup placement that falls between the modern and 60's position. Bridge to center of bridge p/u is 2.0" and bridge p/u to neck p/u center is 2.75". The bass has an ash body, pau ferro board, and a Sadowsky preamp. Current pickups are split coil which sound similar to Nordstrand Big Splits. Nothing wrong with the current setup but tone is on the brighter side. I have a set of Sadowsky/Warwick soap bars I'd like to swap in to see if the tone might be a bit thicker with more low mids without losing too much clarity. Thoughts?

I soon have one coming and thinking putting dual coil pickups in it, I want the dualcoils's low mid while I still get some sort of single coil flavor. we will see.
