I never had a problem with the plastic cover on my 5 or 6 MIJs, or the one NYC Sadowsky that I owned.
They were all wooden screws, but how many times do u have to access the cavity? Maybe once a year?
A stripped hole would only require a wooden toothpick and a little wood glue to repair.
IMHO, I thought that Dan @ Lakland had a great design with the machine screws and machine screw inserts for his backplate.
