Club Sadowsky!!!

+1 to all the above. The Big Singles are a great way to get a smoother, fatter, more modern tone in the Sadowsky vintage/standard basses while still kind of keeping the J bass look, and are also a great way to 'soften up' the uber modern and at the same time aggressive tone of the Sadowsky Modern basses loaded with the stock Sadowsky soap bars. I would really like to check out an ash/maple Modern with the Big Singles sometime.

Of course, the stock HC J pickups have really become the 'standard' Sadowsky tone, since the vast majority of vintage and standard Sadowsky's ship with them installed. Clean, big, crisp and articulate. IMO, if you want to move the vintage/standard Sadowsky's to a bit more of what many of us call a '60's vibe', the Nordstrand single coil J's are great in an alder/RW vintage/standard. Or, if you want to move the Sadowsky J bass to a more aggressive, grindy tone that many of us loosely call a 70's type tone, the Sadowsky singles in an ash/maple vintage/standard just kill.

IMO and IME!!!!

Roger offers some great options to move the tone of his basses around a bit but still keep the general 'Sadowsky sound'.:bassist:

Thanks so much Mark and Ken for your opinions on the various pickup choices' tones. I was hoping to someday get to NYC to try out all those options myself, but it doesn't look like it will happen any time soon.

I've known for a while what I wanted my dream Sadowsky to look like --

I just didn't know which pickups to go with. I was inclined to stick with Sadowsky singles, which have been my favorites of what I have tried so far, and it sounds like they are just what I'd like in my dream bass as well. I'm a big fan of that aggressive growly tone, and I've usually favored single coils.
