We don't know what happened. As nick said, maybe the seller didn't know what they had -- stolen goods?

It's also possible that the seller got their NYC price, but GC goofed on inventory and ripped themselves off by selling for import price (are they bankrupt yet?)

Bottom line is that GC is selling the bass for far less than the NYC rate -- that's the entire reason we're having this conversation -- so they aren't exactly being nefarious here.

Nefarious? Likely not. Inept? Very possibly. But if they're selling it for $1899, they likely only paid $1140 for it. Obviously the seller didn’t know what they had, OR it is possibly stolen, but unreported, but thats just an assumption.

Does anybody know if Sadowsky still makes the modern M5-24 MetroLine with an unlined fretless board and gloss finish? The only one I’ve seen is in the video below with Lars demoing. Think their may be some with the matte-like finish, but I'm not too fond of that look.
Perhaps it’s a special order situation through one of their dealers?
I love my Japanese RV5 PJ, but would love to get my hands on a modern 5 unlined fretless.

I asked Andy Irvine when I saw his demo of the SMX modern and he mentioned that they would not be hitting the US stores until 1st quarter of 2025. I am really wanting one of these!!!!

Question: I remember ready in a Bass Player magazine about a million years ago, Gary Willis saying that lowering pickups brings out more warmth and "roundedness" - obviously sacrificing on volume.... I find my pickups a tad too "harsh" for my ears. Yes, I know it's not a P bass with flats, but wow, the top end is insane. I don't have the VTC circuit - which will probably tame those highs... but would lowering my pickups a smidge "work" for this problem?

Found this; Check if your pickups match recommendation
If not; good starting point

Maybe having neck pickup slightly closer to strings than bridge may help or blend slightly towards neck

SADOWSKY RECOMMENDED SETUP SPECIFICATIONS Pickup height Hold string down at last fret. Measure from bottom of string to top of pole piece All Sadowsky Basses G string: 3/32” (2.38mm) Bass Side 2/32” (1.59mm) Treble Side E or B strings 4/32” (3.17mm) Bass Side 3/32” (2.38mm) Treble Side For P-J basses: Set the bridge pickup to the suggested height. Then adjust the P until you are happy with the balance between the two. The P pickup will always have more output than the J pickup.

A lot of factors here: Setup, strings being used, your playing style or EQ settings.

If I was you, I would start with the basics: Propert setup, strings that deliver the tone you like most and play a little with your EQ.

Yes, changing pickup height can help, but how much it would impact the tone, it's up to you to find out.

The VTC circuit is getting heavy use in my basses these days. My NYC, in particular, has the chambered body; and that bass is without any doubt the brightest Jazz Bass I have ever played. The VTC on that bass lives around the 85% engaged position.

Having the top end capability is nice. But, most musicians are accustomed to hearing bass guitars set to fill in the Bass part. The VTC in the Onboard preamp is a vital piece of that tech, for my purposes.

When I use the Outboard preamp with my passive Jazz Basses, the tone knob on the instrument provides essentially the same function. Got to have it.
