I do not see how these models can be upgraded in any matter. The current VTC and Will Lee preamps. Would require modifications to work with a single pick up. You also have to drill the body to accommodate the switch and the VTC pot. I suppose you could leave the pan pot inside the cavity. All in all a fairly difficult mod to say the least.

Sorry, I was not clear. I didn't mean as a user upgrade of the current model. I was thinking about a new potential ordering option from Sadowsky someday.

Well, the Metroline model includes the VTC. So they’ve definitely got a preamp configured for that single MM pickup. But to the best of my knowledge, the Metroexpress series offers no “upgradable by the factory” options. They're pretty much boilerplate. But, ya never know.

I love buying older SMX’s and modding them to as close to Metroline spec as possible. This is another project just completed and off to the classifieds. Got this from another TB’er. He’d done a fantastic job sanding/polishing the fingerboard all the way up to 8000 grit. It’s really smooth and glassy. Very nice. I installed the new Hipshot “A” bridge in Aluminum high polish chrome, and the VTC add on-kit. Last touch was the pickup cover. As you can see it’s pretty clean. Someone will get a killer fretless. On to the next! PM me if interested.

yeah, again, i was thinking potential (future), or maybe something that could be a NYC custom. again tho, my main point wasn't to suggest modifying the current model. i was just saying i think that preamp might work well for the sound of this bass... that's all.

So not possible to easily add a VTC so it has a passive tone control like other basses?!?
I would hope a tech could easily do it, and I would suggest that a MM type preamp as in the Metrolines
should be made available, (maybe if demand is sufficient, it will happen).

The VTC circuit comes as a complete plate, which includes a balance control. That configuration would not work with the single pick up. The Metroline version is already configured for a single pick up. They would need to offer that circuit as a standalone upgrade.

The neck does not actually have blocks...these are an aesthetic experiment by me...akin to a vinyl wrap for a car (I may switch them to Black)....it has also been modified with a Will Lee pre-amp...hence the toggle switch!!!

I have an RV4 NYC from 2004 that has had TI Jazz flats on it for probably around 5 years or so. I seem to prefer the sound of flats these days and this bass now has become the one that gets most of my gigs. (Mainly rock/blues e.g. Joe Bonamassa covers etc.)
I always liked the flatwound sound that Meshel Ndegeocello had on her Jazz basses and I think she used/uses TIs too.
They are low tension compared to other flats I have tried but as I play with a fairly light touch they suit me well.
The front pickup also gets me into P bass sound territory too.
